For some reason I couldn't update this post yesterday because the forum wouldn't load for me, but I watched the film Родня (kinship) and also listened to the audio from some other films on my hard drive. Sometimes if I have to multitask and don't have the time to sit and watch a 2-hour movie, I'll listen to the audio while doing something else.

As for today, I went on SharedTalk. I originally was going to observe some German conversations, but three Russians ended up talking to me and I had some good conversations with them - I talked for a bit about Ukrainian/Russian dialects too. I also did more messaging today and yesterday on vkontakte.

Tomorrow I'm going back to Washington, DC for school, since it's the end of my winter break.

Do you watch films in Russian only, or do you still need subtitles? I am almost assuming that you don't, so I wander how much of the films you understand. 80%, 90%?

I have some films with English subtitles, but if I had my way I would watch them with Russian subtitles. I'd say that I usually can understand about 80%, but it depends on the simplicity of the film and how clearly the characters are speaking. Also, I tend to understand more when I've watched the film multiple times, of course. :)

I'm back in Washington, DC - flew in today. People are in my room right now watching
some game (football, basketball, I have no idea and don't care). For some reason the
university isn't letting me log in to their Internet from my dorm, so I went to the
library only to find that it was closed because classes haven't yet begun. But I've
found myself a nice little asylum in the basement of one of the main buildings, where
the main computer lab is closed down but there are a few computers still available for
use. I've been standing here (there are no chairs) for probably 1-2 hours messaging
Russians. It's a nice distraction from the noise and bad smells in my dorm - maybe
I'll hang out here more often.

I also met some Russians on the plane, but since I wasn't sitting near them I couldn't
really have a deep conversation - I just asked them where they were from in Russian and
they said that they now live in Washington.

I also reviewed some German vocabulary on the plane...fun wanderlust. :)

Now that is what I would call dedication!

Hi, snovymgodom,
I understand very well your problems related to you living conditions. During my university sudies I was living in the dorm - it was a hell!

Today I went to the library at around noon and was there for a few hours doing the
messaging thing on Vkontakte and also playing that Russian-language hospital game
again. I got a little distracted because one of my friends saw me and wanted to talk,
but he also is learning Russian (he started studying the language this year) and may
want my help at some point. After a break, I spent some more time at the library,
watched a little bit of Берегись автомобиля in my room (but didn't get to really focus
due to distractions). Then my friends wanted to get together, so we had dinner and
hung out for a few hours. One of my friends in that group is Russian, so I did get
some conversation in. Ever since I started learning Russian, it has been a rule that
if I meet someone who speaks Russian (or if I hear Russian on the street), I have to
talk in Russian with them, at least for a little bit. This is especially important
when living in a non-Russian-speaking country since you can't guarantee every day that
you'll run into Russians on the street (unless you live in a place like Brighton
Beach). Anyway, I'm back in the basement of that building doing some more messaging.
Hopefully this will be the last time I have to come here, because tomorrow the library
will resume its schedule of being open for 24 hours. The funny thing is that this
building is open until 2 AM, though I've never heard of people actually needing to do
things here that late.

Anyway, tomorrow is my first day of classes!

Today was the first day of classes - I had my Russian poetry class today, though it was just an introduction; we didn't get to reading actual poetry today. Still was nice to listen and speak to Russian though. This class will be Monday and Wednesday. I also did some more messaging on vkontakte, but not as much as I did the previous days, since I was pretty occupied today with class.
