Yes, that is rather common. I'm not sure if I've seen it outside direct speech, but at least the first two are quite normal, even in lyrics.
I share your doubts. I had to look up the story, and man is it hard to figure out what he means :) The part "что зато было многое прежде" might go like "that, on the other hand, there was a lot going on before". The part "что и прежде ничего тоже не было" might mean something like "that even before there was nothing either". So it's not really redundant, just convoluted :) I'm putting Достоевский way off until sometime I want to spend ages figuring out sentences like that. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

I recognize those I know... When I find a sentence I understand 100% percent, though, it's like Christmas came early! But not knowing the words at all forces me to deconstruct them and slowly get the real meaning of all the bits and pieces, such as пере-, до-,... I suppose it must have been as hard for you learning English? Though with English there's so much incentive...
Yeah, and they actually play palatable music. I spent about a year regularly listening to Русское радио, which plays Russian pop only. I guess it helped with understanding, and all the re-re-re-playing of the same songs again and again gives you more chances to naturally pick lyrics (and words) in bite-sized chunks. I'm not sure the price (i.e. listening to lots of Russian pop) is worth it though. So Наше радио might be a better choice in this respect.[/QUOTE] I agree, I actually enjoy most of their music, which is rare for me even on French radio (I mostly listen to classical music; like my uncle once told me, "It's been selected by the ages" ; but at one point I was listening to them a lot and they do replay the same stuff over and over too. For me, though, it's not really a problem as my level is still quite low so I need lots of repetitions. Also, thanks a lot for your answers to my question. It's completely a stlistic thing for writing and poems (a high style of speech). "He uses И in a way I hadn't seen before, as if to mean: including, even, also... Can you confirm?" Yes you are right and it's rather commonly in Russian. ""бы", "чтобы", "уже", become: "б", "чтоб", "уж". Is that common?" It's common in a usual speech and in poems for rhyme. "Finally, I have a doubt about a sentence: Сначала мне всё казалось, что зато было многое прежде, ПО потом я догадался, что и прежде ничего тоже не было. (I know, this sentence really got my attention) I don't know much Russian but it seems to me this "по" should be a "но". If not then why and what does it mean?" It seems it should be a "но" indeed. WEEK 9
Español: Esta semana ya había acabado con “La guerra del fin del mundo“ y no empezé a leer nuevo libro, pero leí muchos artículos en El País, al menos uno cada día y a veces muchos más. También miré la televisión más de dos horas : algunos informes muy cortos sobre la guerra civíl de Libia (es lo que le están empenzando a llamar los medios y pienso que no se pueden llamar 'acontecimientos' más). También miré otro episodio de “Comando Actualidad“: “¿Usted lo haría?“, que trataba de trabajos peligrosos of difíciles. No fue muy interesante pero pienso que voy seguir mirando esa programa porque muchas de la personas que cuestionan son difícil de entender, así que lo puedo aprovechar linguisticamente, espero. Duró una hora. La otra hora de mirar televisión la cumplí mirando dos debates del programa “Para todos la 2“, uno sobre las nuevas profesiones y el otro sobre el ocio (¿muy complementarios, no?). Fueron bastante interesantes y fácil de entender. Si tengo tiempo esta tarde empezaré leer ’Los Caminos sin fin“ de Pablo Estrada pero no soy segura que le haré porque esta tarde voy a tomar algo con mi marido y con algunos de nuestros amigos (si, tengo un poquito de vida social aunque a mi me parece estar siempre en la Web y tecleando en el ordenador, no solo para este sitio pero sobre todo para la universidad y haciendo traducciones para mis prácticas.) La noche pasada también vi unos amigos de la universidad y comimos y bebimos juntos (un poquito, no fue una noche de locudez, pero...). Esta semana seguramente fue la mas social de mi vida desde hace un rato. Puede parecer un poco triste, pero de verdad no soy un animal social y estoy tratando de dejar la culpabilidad de no serlo. Pero si tengo placer en ver a la gente. Pues, he hablado mucho pero lo que quiero decir es que debería pasar buena noche. ¡A la semana próxima y buena suerte todos con sus (o vuestros, si no os molesta ser tuteados) estudios (y el resto también)! Para mi será una semana de vacaciones, y auque tengo mucho trabajo para la universidad, Aún tendré tiempo para el ocio. Boy do I know that one. At least it doesn't look like it was your own fault. When I was writing my thesis at the University we were just starting out using computers, no training, just jump in there. And my favourite saying when entering our lunch room was "DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT &%#?=&¤ MACHINE DID TO ME TODAY". Someone actually suggested that I'd write a computer manual, not because I was particularly talented, but because I had made every mistake under the sun, and had learned how to get out of them.
