I don't really have much of a midweek update this week, because for the last few days I've been feeling rather burnt out. Pretty much all I've been doing is Pimsleur French on my commute. Poor Esperanto. Anyway, Pimsleur French II is a bit harder than French I, so I do pretty much every lesson twice, which slows me down. However, by the end of the second time, I do feel fairly comfortable with what I've learned, so that's still going fine. I just finished lesson 3.
I've also decided to give 10000 sentences a try. To get that started, I've started putting sentences from Assimil into a new anki deck. I figure, skipping really short sentences like "Pardon, madame." and whatnot, I should still be able to get a thousand or so sentences out of French With Ease. After that, I think I'll start getting sentences from Harry Potter, though of course that will be a lot harder, since I won't have the English translation right there. Unless, of course, Harry Potter is really translated sentence by sentence pretty accurately, in which case I have all the English books, giving me plenty of translation. I guess I'll figure that out once I've finished with Assimil. It's a shame that I can't count on the accuracy of sentences on sites like Tatoeba, because that would make this really easy. Oh, I did do one interesting thing. I tried to watch Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban with the French dubbing and French subtitles, but that proved useless, because the talking and the subtitles were completely different. Completely. They were like two totally separate translations. Weird. Anyway, so I switched to English talking, with French subtitles. I obviously didn't count this as study time, since I was pretty much just watching one of my favourite movies. But I did pick up a couple of words here and there from seeing things in the subtitles, being curious, and looking them up. I learned that "tomber dans les pommes" means to faint! Today, I found this thread. There, you can find a link to a program that makes a word frequency list from any text file you give it. True, it's not perfect, in that it counts words, not root words (i.e. scias, sciis, and scios are all different words), but it's a nice little program and I still find it very useful. I just ran it on La Mirinda Sorĉisto de Oz (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in Esperanto). It has 35029 words, and 4859 unique words. I've started going through the frequency list and using it to pick vocabulary to learn, just for fun, because I could use some fun in my Esperanto right now. So far, I've learned 20 new words (by learned I mean done word lists with them, and when I'm done I'll put them in anki), and according to the frequency list, that means I can understand 62% of the text. Not bad! I realise, of course, that as the percentages go up it will become harder and harder to progress, both because I'll know less of the words already, and because the words will be less frequent, but this still gives me a nice sense of having a mission, at the end of which I will read La Mirinda Sorĉisto de Oz and hopefully understand it all. July 2 - July 8:
Esperanto: 1:53 French: 5:18 eo: Pretty much just anki reviews, and learning new words from La Mirinda Sorĉisto de Oz. fr: Pimsleur: finished lesson 4 of French II Assimil: just did review. I went back to the beginning and just listened without reading to see how much I could understand. The first 8 lessons were fine, but after that I couldn't understand much, which makes me think I need to spend more time on those lessons. And by more time, I mean, er, any time. Harry Potter L-R (French text/audio): finished chapter 16. On Tuesday I'm going on vacation for a week. I'm not going to worry too much about studying during this time, since I'll be really busy and could use a breather anyway. However, I think I will bring something for on the plane and maybe something for a bit of light review by the ocean (I'm going to Vancouver! Yay!). I'm not sure what to take with me, though. I'm definitely *not* taking my computer. This is a vacation, after all. And I'm a travel light, carry-on luggage only kinda girl, so I don't want anything too heavy. I will have my MP3 player, so audio is easy enough. However, I don't want to talk to myself on the plane, so Pimsleur is out of the question. I'm thinking the best thing to do might be to just bring my Esperanto dictionary and a notebook, and just learn some random vocabulary, maybe based on things I'm doing in Vancouver. I could also put some French audio on my MP3 player and just listen to that for some listening practice. I'll let you know how it went upon my return! July 9 - July 15:
French: 0:37 July 16 - July 22: Nada. I was on vacation for a week. I didn't study the day before my vacation because I was getting ready to go. Then I didn't study for several days after my vacation... It's been a nice break, at least. I think I was getting a little burnt out. I think I'll try to ease myself back into studying over the next week, taking it fairly easy, since August 1st marks the beginning of the 6 week challenge, for which I'll be intensely studying French (while maintaining my Esperanto). My trip was awesome, by the way! Vancouver is lovely, and it only rained heavily once while I was there. :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
