German Log Entry 6
Listening:
Assimil German Listening: 3 by 30 minutes over the last 3 days. It’s not the first listening as I listened to these
lessons last year. I’m noticing some progress. I think the Assimil dialogues are great – especially the humour. I
also listened to some of the Michel Thomas Beginner’s German course today.
Pronunciation:
The sound [ʏ].
Glück [glʏk]

müssen [ˈmʏsn̩]
wünschen [ˈvʏnʃn̩]
Dürre (e) [ˈdʏrə] (drought)
dünn [dʏn]
adj, adv thin(ly)
It would be useful to have more examples of (simple) words that differ only in the vowel sounds - [ʏ] and [ʏ:].
Here’s one example but more examples are most welcome.
Wüste (e) (desert) versus wusste (wissen)
Dünn jdn in die Wüste schicken (fam, fig) send sb packing
Ich wusste nicht, was ich tun sollte
I like this expression:
jdm die Suppe versalzen (fam)

Un prophète (je vous le conseille à le voir)
L'homme qui voulait vivre sa vie (le scenario est un peu farfelu mais ce n’était pas mal).
Du vocabulaire :
Limoger
Sortir de l'ornière

German Log Entry 9:
I can probably count on one hand the number of German films I’ve seen. So I decided to seek out a German film
in the local library and today I watched “Alice in den Städten”. It wasn’t bad at all. I was a bit confused at the
start as the dialogue is in English but it switches to German and there’s a bit of Dutch too. And I was fascinated
by the
Wuppertal Floating Tram
which can be seen in the film. Since the characters, travel around a lot, it’s a good chance to see several cities as
they were almost 40 years ago, before the mobile phone and all the gadgets that punctuate modern life.
Here’s some vocab I picked up without much effort.
Dumme: fool
to have something/nothing against sb/sth etwas/nichts gegen jdn/etw haben
Es ist mir egal: I don’t mind
Ausmachen. etw. macht jdm nichts aus sb does not mind sth, sth does not bother sb. z.B. die Kälte macht mir
nichts aus
komisch adj funny, comic(al)
adj, adv strange(ly), odd(ly), funny(-ily)
jdm ist/wird komisch sb
feels/starts to feel strange/funny
kritzeln vti to scribble, to scrawl
I think I’m starting German lessons with an Austrian later in the week. We'll see how it goes.

I replied to an online ad that the teacher had placed on an Irish website. It's a paid lesson not an exchange. First
impressions were good.

Thanks. I would like to try something like that very soon but haven't yet really searched much on this line.
