s0fist, thank you for the recommendations.

I was really excited about the French with Native Audio deck for Anki, but the audio doesn't work for me in either Windows or Linux. In Windows the audio plays just fine on its own but doesnt seem to be linked to Anki. (I've struggled with this problem for more time than I'd like to admit.) Any Anki experts out there who have an idea of what I could do to fix it?

For me, the audio didn't come with by default with the deck.
I had to do what the deck description says (I just did it again to verify that it still works):

After you download the deck, or later when you "open" the deck, go to
settings->deck properties
In the media url field copy and paste: http://static.tatoeba.org/audio/sentences/fra/
and then after you "close" that screen, back at "study screen" go into
tools->advanced->download missing media files
This will take a few (10-30) minutes depending on Internet speed, to download all the audio into a local directory on your computer.

Once it's downloaded, it should work.
I've noticed that every first time I open the deck the first card's sound can take 2-10 sec to play (maybe due to my computer), but after that sound is usually played as soon as you flip the card. You can also replay the sound by pressing the appropriate button or F5, I'm assuming the audio functionality isn't a result of some plugin that I might've installed by accident.

Also, are you using Anki from a phone, or maybe you're trying to use a deck that's being synced using their service (audio isn't synced by default)? If so you might have to manually transfer audio from your computer.

Hello! I am having a flirtation with French since it is a language I've always thought I should know but have never made the effort on it.

My main study right now for the 6WC is Japanese, but I thought to do the basic course through Mango (online database) and just do one lesson of French a day. The concentration is just speaking and can be done quickly. I did the first lessons last night in 12 minutes. I'll definitely know more real French if I do that than I did before!

Just ordered the book Babar's French Lessons, after seeing it in a library. It's from 1963, but looks like it will be helpful to a noob like me.

So far most of my study time has been using French in Action (about 1/3 of my total hours), then vocabulary, then Assimil. I haven't been using my textbook (Fast French) as much because it's just not as interesting as FIA and Assimil. Most of my vocab cards are from Fast French though.

EDIT: I'm glad to see that none of us French learners are still on 0 hours like some of the others, lol. At the moment, I'm the 3rd ranked French learner. GenaOh, you better watch out, because I'm on your tail!

s0fist, I really appreciate your help. Unfortunately, I redid everything and it still didn't work. Oh well - the deck "beginner french with audio" is enough to keep me busy at the moment.

Jeffers, that's me! I'm now 10 minutes ahead (a short-lived victory, I'm sure). I'm checking out FIA now based on your recommendation.

Tricycle, I've just passed you again. It's great having someone else learning French at around the same number of hours. I find it motivating to think that if I slack off for a day or two, you'll be too far ahead of me!

My daily goal is to do about 2 hours of study each day. I didn't quite do it on the first couple of days, but I've been managing close to 2 hours lately.

I don't understand how the front runners can be doing 5-6 hours a day! Especially druckfehler, as he/she works full time! Just awesome!

EDIT: Let me know what you think of FIA, Tricycle (or GenaOh... what should I call you? LOL... I guess tricycle here and GenaOh on Twitter)

I am a little late for August, but I just joined. I would still like to participate.
I took French in High School, but I don't recall much of anything. I would say I am a
complete beginner. I will be using Pimsleur, at least one lesson per day. I might jump
ahead because I drive a lot during the day. I did lesson one today and I was surprised at
how comfortable it was. I also have Assimil, I will wait until I get further along in
Pimsleur first. Merci.

Also, Jeffers please let me know how that Babar book turns out. It is Babar the elephant,
right?
If you know of any way to involve the children please post that as well. My young
children are asking to watch movies in French.

@MrFrenchFox:

I do most of my French along with my 13 year old son. His favourite learning tool right now is the French in Action DVD set. We also use Assimil together, and Fast French. We take turns testing each other on vocabulary cards based on Fast French.

I have been doing bits and pieces of French with my younger children as well. Ladybird publishes 4 books about Max et Mathilde. The CD reads through the whole book, and then reads through again allowing the listener to repeat each sentence.

They also like to listen to French music. We have Songs in French for Children, but they prefer the pop CD I got: Guillaume Grand.

I don't think I'll be using the Babar book right away, because I'm still shaky in my pronunciation. I still need audio with my books; once I'm better at reading I still prefer to use audio as well, but at least I'll be able to make a good stab at reading correctly.
