weird how due to lots of classroom study my boredom threshold seems to be so much lower in German... and there's something else... In fact, I almost opened a thread about listening being tiring...
...but then I tried listening to a LOTR audiobook that I downloaded but never listened. one of my favourite parts, the beginning of the second part of the first book (before the Council of Elrond). and I totally enjoyed it *___* now that i've STOPPED listening, my brain feels tired, though... toki pona time? thought i'd copy my goals here from the TAC thread.
I've realized just very recently that I don't have to think in the terms of CEFR or this forum. If I'm fine with that, it's not a tragedy if it takes me long to move a language into the "Speaks" category. That's not worth doing for the sake of it, otherwise I could've already reached it in Esperanto ages ago. So, for Portuguese and Italian I'm aiming for writing fluency. Basic fluency minus speaking. Mum wants to go to Italy though, so perhaps I'll actually reach basic fluency. But this doesn't matter now that we don't have any specific plans yet. Spanish - I'd like to minimize the gaps in my basic Spanish, but that's not such a high priority. High intermediate would be good though. EDIT: need more specific goals Romanian - would be nice to be able to write at least a little or at least to understand the grammar and structure(s) properly. Catalan - this depends on how football stuff goes, hehe. I currently have mixed feelings about Barça so learning enough for me to develop a Catalan personality would be weird:D (nevermind... I'm a gemini :P) Croatian - would be nice to be able to read fiction. German - what a shame not to be using the opportunity. Basic fluency and aiming for advanced by the time I graduate (2014) Indonesian - intermediate level would be good Karelian - being able to write a simple text Polish - 6 week challenge in May for some pre-Euro 2012 joy ;) Danish - hopefully an introduction before the SAS-Ligaen season restarts, as I feel like I'm not benefitting from watching football in it and this needs to be changed. TBD - 6WC in August, the language of the country that wins Euro 2012 unless it's Russia, England, France, Poland or (if I do 6WC in it) Danish. the runner-up country's language then :) Specific things to do/read: Italian: do all units in Italiano per medici. read the book of stories with multilingual notes. read more AC Milan jokes and then something proper, I've seen Cuore di cane but if Ancelotti becomes Tottenham's coach I'll read his biography first :D Portuguese: omg just realized I can ask a friend's girlfriend (who's an exchange student there) to get me something! namely Fernando Ribeiro's books, after all that's why I even started learning Portuguese! also something about Benfica [s]and a David Luiz shirt[/s] Spanish: hoping to finish Forlán's book even before January, then cien años de soledad... also have some Gogol... Finnish: Antti Halme (currently reading, might also finish before the New Year - he's easy to read), vampire stories, Tolkien, something in the original... ummmmmmmm.... EDIT: oh and Rakkaudella, Hynynen finally. hello gurl that's just some 4h of audio! German: jokes (Ilya Frank's method), hopefully also Das Parfum though I don't believe this much myself :D *looks sadly at a lovely children's book in Belarusian* Listening-Reading: Harry Potter in Romanian and Italian. update: downloaded lots of fantasy in Polish. will listen at least to Narnia and a fabulous Sapkowski audiobook with 100+ actors and sound effects. and to Tolkien at least a little<3 most likely: Harry Potter and hopefully Tolkien Uni: probably Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for individual reading. Next term maybe Dracula... update: think I'll do Narnia instead. it officially has to be a single 300+ book but my groupmate read two 200p books and it was fine. so I'll "read" the first book and The Horse and His Boy (my fave Narnia book) other: -do some basic lessons in my Italian textbook (for Croatians) -BBC and maybe other video courses - it was nice to realize I don't mind them -internalizing the stuff from this book (can't be bothered to get the link) in order to have a more systematic knowledge/understanding of the Romance group as a whole (minus French, is it silly to dislike a language that much???) -watch football in Ukrainian, Danish and occasionally Dutch, Polish -maybe learn by heart some gorgeous texts in Belarusian? -do some stuff from my Karelian textbook, add many sentences to SRS Edited by Serpent on 19 December 2011 at 10:25pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

well, the PMS phase is here. i'm back to reading the jokes because what can be better at this time than humour? :)
i started typing this a few days ago but decided to wait till the phase ends to post it: I've indeed been all emo. I tried to continue reading the jokes but decided this could wait. Instead I've listened-read the hobbit a little, spent time enjoying art (movies, music - and i went with mum to the painting studio and painted a little myself). I've even tried scriptorium again! I think I failed last time because it was all just too sacred. My favourite book, my favourite part, my favourite language... a gorgeous notebook - I washed my hands before starting! :D of course it was too serious to last long enough. now though i've copied some special bits by Coelho, I didn't care about my handwriting and I used a normal notebook. "keep it simple" works, heh. I discovered the GLOSS site and did some lessons, especially in Portuguese and Croatian <3 --- since then, i've listened-read the hobbit quite a bit more. i also randomly tried listening to an audio of that Finnish book with too much rural vocabulary (Tulitikkuja lainaamassa) and i loved the narrator! and as I mentioned elsewhere, I found that German audio is best combined with English text for Listening-Reading. oh and sexy voices were more important than usual... really got me to L-R more. so conclusions for this ovulation phase: -i'm all emo -need audiobooks with sexy voices (mmm the dragon talk in the German hobbit!) or just focusing on the languages that have a more romantic feeling about them (for me that's Croatian and Italian mostly) -watched quite a lot of football, but need to be more attentive when checking the schedules in this phase. could've watched more. -i'm very accepting and i should learn not to skip classes especially in this week. (finished a translation easily btw) also relatively talkative in class. -able to say things nicely/politely, at this forum too. also no longer frustrated about the lack of interest in my thread on optimization for females -can't make a neat, organized list of conclusions. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

i've just realized that when learning Croatian in this phase, I'm able to feel almost the same joy I felt when I just started Finnish. Just finding out how to say really basic things. normally that's frustrating, but not in these specific circumstances.
anyway, PMS is considered a good time for thinking over your plans and relationships... and i stumbled upon the study plan thread ("it's not just about pimsleur"). and wow. thinking thinking thinking. :D i was astonished just how similar my views on language learning are to those of the member doviende. including the frustration with German genders, heh. now trying to decide how to approach Danish and Polish next year... I especially love the idea of bootstrapping, getting familiar with the grammar and getting a general idea of what's possible and what isn't in the language. this happened unnoticeably with the Romance languages (at least as a whole - there are still some individual things that are confusing: confusing and fascinating like the Portuguese infinitives with personal endings, or confusing and annoying like the Spanish double indications of the dative, these les and los that just sound uneducated). damn, i've been thinking so much but i have almost nothing specific to say. off to read his blog then... 1 person has voted this message useful |
