I use Teach Yourself Vietnamese because it is written by my Vietnamese teacher Dana Healy (she teaches me at university). I think it's ok but I wouldn't like to rely on it for pronunciation. But it explains grammar relatively well and you get a decent amount of vocab.
In comparison, I bought Colloquial Korean and don't like it, but to be honest I have no real reason. I think I'm just used to the TY layout, so I then bought TY Korean and much prefer it (seems more "user-friendly").

In response to the talks about costs of courses in Australia - I recently purchased Teach Yourself Hungarian and checked out Colloquial Hungarian at the same time - it was $AU80.95 for TY and $AU84.95 for Colloquial.
I actually chose Teach Yourself as I have used TY German before and enjoyed the program.

Purely out of curiosity, does anyone know how many words the TY and Colloquial programs aim to teach?

As a rough guess - going from the vocab at the back of the Teach Yourself book for Hungarian.... around 1400-1500 words...???

Thanks Katie. On another note, does anyone know how useful the Colloquial Series 2 are? They are only offered for a few languages, but is it necessary to have done the first book in the series, or is it OK to have done another course/book/etc. and use the second book as an extension?

In my opinion, The Teach Yourself and Colloquial books do not go indepth enough and don't provide enough audio material. I think they are fine as beginner or starter material but you will not progress far enough with them to be useful beyond a few helpful phrases.
