Si, jo sóc aqui mateix, en un pis de l´éixample de Barcelona després de un dia llegint en català (i et dic tot el dia!) Bé, em preguntes sobre que llegeixo, i la veritat és que normalment llegeixo els periodics (el periòdic de catalunya, ara, avui, la vanguardia etc) i l´ávenç també i llavors llibres... Una tieta de la meva dona m´ha regalat un llibre (prou gran) sobre La Volta a Catalunya (ciclisme) i avui he llegit un llibre sobre la història de La Vanguardia (és important per el meu doctorat). I bé, altres llibres? No sé... Normalment llegeixo coses per el meu doctorat així que no sé res de llibres normales, però sempre hi ha TV3, ¿no?
Bé, ja tinc que tornar al meus llibres, que tal teu francès? Segur que va bé, docs ja tens català, castellà i tal! Adéu! (claro que también escucho, leo y hablo mucho castellano aqui...) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Last day in Barcelona. Taking an evening flight home and going to read El País, a nice
serious paper to wrap everything up here. I like El País, it was the first newspaper I learnt to read in Spanish (because it was the only one available in the paper edition where I went to uni in the UK) and I have fond memories of reading my first article etc. I feel I've done lots of Spanish and Catalan this week, I hope when I have my classes on Monday that I can notive some improvement. But if not, at least I know I have used these languages for a week in their country, so it's OK. Sometimes one feels the progress, sometimes one doesn't feel it. But it´s there, somewhere, working away towards better grammar, more fluent speech and better understanding. 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

It sounds like you really took advantage of your time there, linguistically speaking – good for you! I hope I get a chance to see the beautiful city of Barcelona sometime soon. :)

As the end of January nears I thought I'd make an update, perhaps I could make this a monthly thing?
Catalan My Catalan has come on a lot. I've read books and newspapers in it. I've conversed in it. I've listened to people speak it and watched the news in it. So lots and lots of exposure but no real 'study' per se. However, my Catalan lessons at university start up tomorrow, so I'll go back to a mixture of study and practice and continue from there. I still find it weird that I can read it without problems but speaking and listening are an issue, but it'll come with time. Let's see where I am in 11 months! German As in Catalan I have not done any real 'study' of this language, merely watched a few films and TV series. Most of my German study has revolved around a book I'm currently reading, 'Daisy Sisters' by Henning Mankell, which although it sounds English is actually in German (translated from Swedish, naturally). I don't understand everything. Sometimes a whole sentence will make hardly any sense to me. But I can follow the story and I enjoy seeing the events develop and the characters move. Also I'm both practising my existing vocabulary and learning new words through content. Which is cool. As above, my university classes will start up next week and I'll mix some study with some more informal reading etc. Oh, and I have to thank my language partner too, who helps me a lot! Spanish I feel I've been in the same mode of Spanish for 2 years... I can understand almost everything. I can read everything. But speaking? Hmm... Sometimes I feel SO good, and then at others times I can hardly get any sounds out as I trip up over conjugation and so forth. But I know my Spanish is good. I know I'm improving too. So it's a bit of 6 of one, half a dozen of another. After speaking a lot of Spanish last week in Barcelona I know I need to improve on a few elements of grammar: subjunctive, imperfect subjunctive etc. So I'm going to spend a few hours a week working on those, and I should really watch some TV too to improve my vocabulary, especially my colloquial run of the mill type stuff. My Language Blog - Available Here - is coming along well too. I'm really trying to develop it into something more than a personal site so I've introduced some new features in the past week. Hopefully that'll make it a bit better, but we'll see. So more study, more classes and more languages! Ciao! Me vas a robar? Tio!!!
Jajaja! Bueno, mi semana va así: Lunes: dos horas de català por la tarde y dos horas de castellano por la noche, es decir cuatro horas de lenguas, y más, lenguas que se parecen pero también disfrutan de muchas diferencias importantes. Así que en mi clase de català pienso en castellano y en mi clase de castellano? Al revés, claro! Bueno, ahora llegamos a martes, tengo una hora de català, y no hacemos nada porque comparto clase con los que cursan el segundo año de grado (hago yo el doctorado pero puedo hacer català porque me ayuda con el proyecto que hago) y les gustan charlar, reir... cualquier cosa que no sea APRENDER!!! Bueno, así es, no? Por la noche miro la tele, en este momento Borgen y Forbrydelsen (en danés) y me encanta (y engancha) tanto que casi quiero dejar todo y aprender esa lengua! Miércoles, hoy, hago alemán y paso dos horas entiendo todo lo que me dicen, pero sin saber como responder, pero bueno, voy aprendiendo, vale? Jueves, estoy jodido y más o menos miro la tele otra vez. Viernes, normalmente voy a ver una peli independiente, lo que sea, quiza de dinamarca, de asia... etc. Y los fines de semana? Bueno, los deberes... (si me acuerdo!) y de vez en cuando leo el País, ara o Süddeutsche Zeitung. Claro que durante la semana hago el doctorado (de historia de contemporánea de españa) que en este momento significa leer en inglés, castellano y català así que parte de mi trabajo también sirve de práctica para mis lenguas, que no vale para tanto pero tampoco sea nada. Quería estudiar mucho hoy pero esta nevando y me duele la cabeza, así que voy a tomar un café y leer un poco de
mi libro "Daisy Sisters" en alemán. Ya tendré tiempo mañana para una sesión más estricta de lenguas. El Libro es muy interesante y cuenta la historia de una familia desde 1942 hasta no sé cuando, no entiendo cada palabra pero voy aprendiendo, así que es buen ejercicio para el cerebro!
