Alright, here are two of my favorite bands. Apologies that I'm at work and can't write hanzi, so I'll transcribe it.
FAMA: Lam Lam Everyone
FAMA: Fu Gaap Tin Haa
I'd like to give you ten different songs by FAMA, because they really rock. But here are two of my favorites. Some of the enjoyment disappears when you don't understand the lyrics, of course. Their songs are nice and friendly (these are about appreciating what you have and being nice to each other).
There's also LMF, in the more "angry" rap category. This one I like very much; it's about censorship ("grabbing my middle finger isn't as easy as you think").
LMF: Zaa Gan Zong Zi
Cantonese has some really good music, especially if you're into rap. This is an area where it outshines Mandarin, which is famous for its crappy music, though there is some decent Mandarin music, too, but you really need to dig.

Side note: @ Ari I saw on one of your other threads that you are a big fan of Chinese Pod. Did you use this exclusively when you were learning Mandarin? |

Yeah, pretty much. I used some other methods in the very beginning, but quickly gave up on them. CPod is what took me to a level where I could engage with native material.

Thanks Ari,
Those vids were a lot of fun. So what does "lam" mean anyway?

It's a pretty complicated word, actually. Here is the CantoDict entry (they're using the "lam1" pronunciation, not the "lam3" one). I think the "sweet talk" meaning is the one being used here, so the song is encouraging people to say nice things to each other.

Not much, to be honest. What little I've heard is pretty ordinary in terms of music and the lyrics are usually as bland as Mandarin music in general (of course it's going to be hard to write political lyrics in China). There probably is some good rap out there, especially Taiwanese rap (though I suspect much of that is in Taiwanese), but it's not easy to find (though I admit to not trying too hard).
Here is a typical Mandarin rap vieo. I think it's pretty alright. The beat is nice, though a bit monotonous. The lyrics are excellent for the Mandarin learner. It's pretty much an advertisement for Beijing, listing popular tourist attractions. The language is pretty simple (the lyrics are below the video).

How about this?
双截棍/Nunchucks
or this?
本草纲目
The 本草纲目 is an ancient text about the palliative effects of herbs that Traditional
Chinese Medicine is based on.
Admittedly, I don't listen to much Chinese music either. And I don't think much of rap
(in any language).
But you cannot mention modern contemporary Mandarin music without mentioning Jay Chou.
He has a pretty huge following in East Asia. And he was Kato in that Green Hornet
movie. And he's Taiwanese.

I didn't know Jay Chou did rap; that's pretty cool. My girlfriend is a big fan, though I prefer his movies to his music. I loved that basketball kung fu flick, whatever that was called.

Some other Chinese rap videos. Cos the genre isn't exclusive to Jay Chou.
Lee Hom - 在梅边
Speeds things up towards the end if that's your kinda thing.
Nan Quan Mama - Here We Go
Soft Lipa - 收敛水
3 Cool - 月亮代表我的心里有问题
Samples Teresa Teng's song.
Pan Weibo - 玩酷
Be With You
Just cos it's got Akon
The current Mandopop industry is centered in Taiwan. That's why most mainstream
artistes are based in Taiwan. Even those from Malaysia, Singapore and the US. Even
Cantopop singers have gradually gravitated towards Mandarin music to capture a bigger
share of the market.
*Ari*
I think my favorite Jay Chou rap song is the one from 霍元甲/Fearless.
I like the fusion with getai. Better than in 在梅边.
霍元甲
