I think I'm starting out somewhere around Zero or early A1. I took a couple of years of
Spanish in school (over 10 years ago) but find I'm still familiar w/ many of the beginner
lessons, words, phrases, etc. I'll be travelling to Spain this year, so it's important to me
to develop some proficiency in Spanish. My goal is to be an early A2 by mid-year (July, the
month I leave), and then be a solid A2 by the end of December.
Practically (in addition to the CEFR achievements), I'd like to be able to have decent
understanding/comprehension when watching TV shows, maybe some news, easy reading (magazines,
comics, etc) and popular music.
An interesting challenge will be no try and develop a European Spanish accent versus the
Latin America Spanish accent. I know it's not super important but I'd really like to try.
My plan is to use multiple learning methods:
- the FSI Spanish Basic audio/text set, and then the FSI Spanish Programmatic audio/text set
- The Learning Language Spanish Basics Complete set
- The LiveMocha Spanish 101-202 lessons (the old free ones)
- The Coffee Break Spanish Podcast
- Another PodCast - TBD
Once I get a bit further, I'd like to identify some intro (ie - child or teen level) reader
books, videos, or audio.
I'm going to push for 1 hour a day but I know that will be a stretch, as I'll be trying to
ramp up my German (my other destination this year) at the same time (much less grad school,
work, etc.)
Here we go folks, looking forward to the structure of this competition.

I'm also on this team. The Romance languages that I'm learning are French and Spanish. I'm glad that we're on the same team and that we'll hopefully be able to communicate in Spanish!
