Introduction
This will be my log for TAC 2012. Last year I joined the TAC with the hope of learning Spanish, French, and German. Well my studies never really took off and I lost interest in learning those languages. But this is a new year and I’m hoping that this will be the time that I finally study other languages.
The only languages that I have actually studied are Latin and Spanish. I had two years of Latin in high school but I really don’t remember anything now. As for Spanish, I first started taking classes in middle school and continued throughout high school. After a two year break, I had the opportunity to go to Spain for five weeks in a summer study abroad program. I absolutely loved my time there and this just reinvigorated my interest in the language. When I returned, I was able to fit Spanish classes into my schedule at college.
Foreign languages have always been a huge interest of mine. Sometimes I think I like learning about languages rather than studying the languages themselves. So now it’s time to get serious and actually pick which languages to learn. In my current situation, there are no languages that stick out as necessary to learn or even practical. So I decided to choose two languages, in addition to Spanish, to study this year: French and Croatian. I really can’t wait to start studying these languages.
I’ve also joined Team Žá for this year’s TAC. I’m looking forward to being a member of this group since we will all be studying at least one Romance and Slavic language. I hope that we can help motivate and help each other out. Most of all, I hope that I can continue with my studies for the entire year.

Goals
Spanish – Out of these three languages, I’m the most advanced in Spanish. I’m not entirely sure which level I would consider myself, but I guess it would be about B1-B2. The goal for me at this stage is to acquire new vocabulary and idioms. I don’t have a concrete number of words I want to learn per day but I would like to just learn as much as I can. There are not many opportunities to speak Spanish where I live, so I want to focus on reading, writing, and listening. Speaking would be extra. I think B2+ or C1 at the end of the year would be a reachable goal.
French – Aside from any cognates with Spanish or English, I’m a beginner with French. I’m pretty sure that my knowledge of Spanish will help me tremendously, so I’m hoping to advance pretty far this year. Again, there are not many opportunities to speak French around here, so I will primarily focus on reading, writing, and listening as well as learning correct pronunciation. I think B1 at the end of the year would be a reachable goal.
Croatian – I am a complete beginner with Croatian. In addition to Spanish and French, I wanted to learn another language that is not a Romance language and somewhat different/off-beat. Therefore, Croatian it is. Once again, reading, writing, and listening will be the focus. Since this is a Slavic language, I know that more effort will be required with Croatian. I’m up for the challenge but I know that I’m just learning this language for fun. I think A1+ to A2 at the end of the year would be a reachable goal.
As this is my first time studying languages outside of school, I want to try and keep time of how many hours I spend studying. There is just one goal for this: As much as possible.

Resources
Spanish
My Spanish resources will primarily consist of native materials. I think I’m advanced enough to not focus on grammar as much as learning vocabulary and the nuances of the language. I have already read the first two Harry Potter books and underlined the unknown words and I already have the next three books which I hope to begin soon. I will also try to use Anki to study these new words.
French
My French resources will all be online. I’m trying to see how far I can get with any free resources I can find. I have several websites dedicated to learning French and I will use those as my primary resources. I will also be using the FSI Phonology and FSI French Basic Course. I have good and bad things about FSI so I’m looking forward to see how these work. As with Spanish, I will try to use Anki to study new words.
Croatian
My Croatian resources will be two books that I have access to online: Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, A Textbook and Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, A Grammar. I also have a copy of Colloquial Croatian that I may look into. I will also try to use FSI Serbo-Croatian since it is free online. I will also try to Anki to study new words.

as for Anki cards, have a look at this: http://www.antimoon.com/how/usingsm-makeitems.htm
I really recommend using entire sentences. Don't try to memorize them, just make sure you understand every word. I usually choose sentences where I don't know one word out of each 5.
it's also possible to add a separate field in anki and get it to make you type it. I recommend keeping this separate from the answer.

Week 1
Spanish – 0 hours (0 hours total)
French – 0 hours (0 hours total)
Croatian – 0 hours (0 hours total)
I have no idea where this week went and I wasn’t even that busy. I guess I’m still in holiday mode. Well I’m hoping to get past this disaster of a week and hope to improve over the next week (which means any studying I do will be an improvement!). Btw, all these zeros are depressing.

So, I'm going around HTLAL stalking Croatian-learners, and I just found you. Hi! :) I just started this beautiful language as a total beginner myself and am trying to connect with some other students of Hrvatski, because it's not so often studied... anyway, consider this my notification that I'll be following your log and cheering you on! By the way, I have the same book (BSC A Textbook) and I'd be interested to hear what you think of it. So far, it's intense but I really like it.

I would say these first two weeks have been pathetic. Get it together.
Jinx - I also saw that you were starting Croatian and excited to see another learner of this rarely studied language. As you can probably see, I have not studied anything yet but I'm curious to get started on the textbook because it does look intense. Once I get started, I'll tell you what I really think about it. Good luck with your studies and I'll be following your log for sure. I'm hoping to find some motivation.

I have the 1998 Colloquial Croatian and Serbian book, as well as the Spoken World Croatian. I like both of them a lot, and I think they're less formidable than the BSC books you guys are using. If you get overwhelmed, you might want to check one of the other two out. =)
