YAY! It's time for the TAC 2012.
I apologize for the late start of my log. I scrapped the entry I had been taking a while to develop, because it was too wordy. This is skimmed down and much better. I'm Derek, and my focus languages will be German and Russian. I will also have side projects in various languages, the current ones being Hebrew, Spanish, Dutch and Norwegian. I will be using a similar hour counting method to the one Ellasevia uses. Deutsch: Level: High B2, Low C1 Goal: Solid C1 (level at which to get a 4 on all parts of the TestDaF) Plan: 208 hours for the year (at least 80 hours before July), around 4 hours a week I will mostly just be reading and listening to audio of books. I will start by rereading both Lenz and the first Harry Potter. Not including those, I hope to read at least 3 good sized pieces of literature before July. With four hours a week, I don't know how I'm going to do that, so I'm probably gonna end up doing more hours than originally planned (if I stay motivated). I'll use Practice Makes Perfect Complete German Grammar to review for the TestDaF the month before I take it. Русский язык: Level: Solid B1 Goal: Solid/High B2 Plan: 208 hours for the year, around 4 hours a week. The beginning of my Russian studies this year will be geared towards finishing the Princeton Russian Course. I hope to go at the pace of about 4 lessons a week (each lesson taking an hour), and eventually slow down as the material becomes more and more unfamiliar. I'm DYING to try out my new Russian grammar workbook, and I really wanna get started reading and listening, so I'm going to attempt to start to read a Russian book (NOT RUSSIAN LITERATURE, just a book :) by July 15th. If I finish the first year of the Princeton Russian Course (which also has reading material near the end), then I will promptly begin the second year. I will also make a dialog book. This will essentially be an Assimil of all of the dialogs in PRC. Teango suggested that I only use the dialogs and do away with the grammar, but I cannot bring myself to do this, so I guess I'm going to have to take his advice only halfway. עברית: Level: A0 "False Beginner" (Being Jewish I have experience with both the Hebrew script and some phrases and words here and there, as well as pronunciation) Goal: Solid A2 (possibly B1?) Plan: 2 hours a week (104 hours total) I have the Routledge Introductory Hebrew Course. I'd like to get through it at a steady pace, absorbing all vocabulary at a steady pace. My objective is to have very good pronunciation. I hope to be emigrating to Israel when I'm older, so getting started now seems like an ideal plan. Español: Level: Solid B1 Goal: Solid B2/Ready to participate in AP Spanish next year Plan: 1 hour a week (52 hours total) I'm using "Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Spanish Grammar" to review and learn a few new things regarding grammar. After I finish that (which should be around July), I'll start my summer work for the class, which involves a lot of reading and whatnot. I may also enter into Anki "Mastering Spanish Grammar", seeing as how I need extreme vocabulary review. Norwegian: Level: A1/A2 Goal: B1 (Lofty, but hey, a guy can dream) Plan: 1 hour a week (52 hours total) I'm going to be using Hippocrene Beginner's Norwegian because I can't stand Linguaphone. I may switch to Teach Yourself. Depends on which one I find to be better. After that I will use a very good website that has news in simple Norwegian, so I'll most likely read that and talk to my Norwegian friend once done with the course I choose. Dutch: Level: A0 "False Beginner" Goal: Solid B1 (look at my goals for Norwegian haha) Plan: 1 hour a week (52 hours total) I'm going to be using Living Language Spoken World Dutch. I don't know how long this will take to get through, however I just want to toy with it, and see how far I get with Dutch. After that maybe reading. I am applying to two schools in the Netherlands next year, and I want to be semi prepared for the pre-bachelor Dutch course. LET IT BEGIN! As a native speaker of English, you should find Norwegian very easy. And since you also know German, it will be even easier. So B1 might not be so lofty a goal if you put in a little more time, I don't know if you can do it on only an hour a week though.
The main difficulty with Norwegian is the dialects. You can learn quite a lot, come to a place in Norway with a strange dialect, and wonder if you even studied the right language or if the guy at the bookstore sold you the wrong course. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I have only one beef with it (eller en høne å plukke med deg:-). it makes me want to go running for my Hebrew books. I envy you your B1 level in Russian - but I am counting on you to help me reach that some time. I also look forward to having talks in German on Skype with you guys. I am not as advanced as you in German either, but there I can at least converse. As for Spanish and Norwegian, if you would like some conversation practise, I am all yours. My Spanish is fairly good, and I used to be a Spanish teacher in my former life, and I repeat my offer to help you out with any material in Norwegian you would like. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Ich freue mich sehr, mit dir auf Norwegisch, Deutsch, Russisch, UND Spanisch zu sprechen. Wir sollen miteinander kein Englisch sprechen, außer wenn wir mit den anderen sprechen :D. Pues entonces, propongo que cuando tenemos la ocasión, hablemos tambien en español por Skype. Así no tengo que estar tan nerviosa como cuando vamos a hablar en ruso.

Sí, naturalmente me siento más comódo cuando hablo en español que cuando hablo en ruso. La problema que tengo es que hace mucho tiempo desde que lo he hablado. Entonces espero que cuando hablamos en español llegará a ser.
Sorry I can not respond in Dutch :(. I wish to apply to Universiteit van Amsterdam and hopefuly Leiden University. Both are options I'm exploring :). I've not applied yet; I'm supposed to start applying next year :D. Edit: In addition to these responses, I'd like to announce that my absence is due to exams that are currently going on. Despite them, I have managed to get in some German....with my German exam. It was actually quite nice I felt more comfortable speaking German after reading and writing German for a half an hour for a test. Goede keuzes! Dat zijn twee van de beste universiteiten in het land. Ik studeer aan de UvA maar ik heb destijds ook Leiden overwogen omdat het zo'n mooie stad is en de universiteit is de oudste van het land. Ik heb toch voor de UvA gekozen omdat ik Amsterdam een geweldige sfeer vind hebben en het is een wereldstad in plaats van een studentenstad.
