In case you don't know Acut there is a separate Space Repetition Softwaree called Anki.
It's very widely used on this forum. It's a free download and the best part is you can
download the decks that others have put up. It may save you some time.

Thanks for the suggestion, Adrean, but I really like taking my time writing my own flashcards. I write them in my own idiosyncratic way, which I developed after using Interlex, and I think writing my own flashcards is essential for retention and keeping me interested.

Anyways, Mnemosyne is very simple, which is why I picked it up. But it is beginning to bug me, since it is scheduling the hardest cards too far into the future, and it keeps asking me the cards I already know. I may change my deck to Anki if I see this keeps happening in the next few weeks.

Now I'm reviewing the units in the French Phonology course - I just want to get the most out of it. I guess I'll begin posting samples of my French pronunciation for the forum's appreciation. Let's see how well or bad I am doing.

Today I've worked with my Spanish flashcards. It is beginning to bug me that only a few of them are getting scheduled for next week, although I'm sure much more could be scheduled for latter. So far, I'm keeping an input of about 50 cards per day.

I posted a sample of my French pronunciation (http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp? TID=31003&PN=1&TPN=1). Any feedback is appreciated. Today I plan to review the units 4 and 5 of the French Phonology course. If I'm not too bored, I shall begin unit 6 as well.

Hello teammate.

Sounds like you are on a good way and are taking French quite seriously, have fun. :-)

For Pronunciation, there are books called Phonetique Progressive by Cle. I haven't used
them but I have used Vocabulaire and Grammaire from the same series and those are great.
It helps as well to listen a lot and repeat after the audio for whatever you want but it
may be too fast in the beginnings.

The subjective grading of words in an SRS is actually a good thing. There is no better
way to tell how hard or simple the word was for you. I often put worse grades so I know I
am gonna see the word sooner.

Thanks Cavesa! I'll take a look on those "Progressive series". They seem interesting!

From now on, I will not write in a monolithic style again. I'll make bold headlines telling what the next paragraph is about. Hopefully, this will make my posts more interesting.

ON PRONUNCIATION: I got some awesome feedback from this forum. If you want to take a look on my pronunciation (or rather, not look, but listen ) here's the address http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?T ID=31003&PN=1&TPN=1

(unfortunately, I can not hyperlink, because I'm a newbie in this forum. Just ctrl+c and ctrl+v that address.)

ABOUT SRS: Mnemosyne is making me frustrated. Despite the fact I've been working on that deck for more than nine days, it is refusing to schedule any cards for later than a week. And it is not repeating the hard words frequently enough. Anyways, I've learned a lot of vocab, so I can't complain much.

A RANT ON VOWELS: Fellow Brazilian Portuguese speakers: Did anyone tell you French nasal sounds would be easy because Brazilian Portuguese is teeming with nasals? I have sad news for you.

They lied.

Don't panic. I was also fooled. And I am a fairly smart person (at least, that's what my family tells me. Don't dare spoil my naive happiness saying otherwise.).

Although French nasals are somewhat similar to their Br-Pt analogues, they aren't exactly the same, for your sadness (or pleasure, in case you are a phonological masochist. Not my case.) In fact, my Larousse dictionary has confirmed my suspicions. Not a single French nasal has a Br-Pt equivalent. And vice-versa.

Not a single one of them! Isn't it funny how two Romance languages can both have a variety of nasal sounds and it just happens that none of those sounds overlap? It's a linguistic conspiracy, for sure!

The "in" in "cinq" is too open. The "on" in "bon" is too closed (and short, IMO). And so on. So, despite the fact my native language has a fabulous nasal repertoire, it's useless for French.

And you thought you were lucky not to be studying Taa Language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taa)

A RANT ON THE FRENCH R: Many people complain about the French R. It's my turn to complain about it.

It seems that I have a quota of how many french "R"s I can use in a day. Say, it's 100 French Rs per day. After that, my throat rebels, and refuses to produce that sound for another 24 hours. After that, all I can do is say the "h" sound as in the English word "hat".

Yesterday, I walked my dog. She's a great companion for Phonological experiments, because unlike my parents, she doesn't give me a strange look if I start saying French sounds out of nowhere (it happens when I'm bored). Anyways, my goal for that walk was to pronounce "ouvre votre livre", which is a tongue-twister for me. Just when I thought I was getting it right, my throat tells me I had exceeded that day's quota. And there's no hope but wait.

Sneezing after saying too many French Rs in a row is also weird. It's a very peculiar feeling.

Does anyone out there share these impressions?

(as a phonological revenge, here is a tongue-twister for any French speaker trying to pronounce the Portuguese R: Um tigre, dois tigres, trĂªs tigres. If you can't say it fast, don't worry, because I can't either =D. I always say "tres trigres").

AFTER TWO CONSECUTIVE RANTS, I MUST SAY: French is beautiful. One day, I'll be able to speak it nicely.

Au revoir!

Good luck with the French r! Luckely I'm blessed with a native language known for its glutteral sound, so for me a was a small ajustment.

But some off the other sound were quiet hard a mere "un" par example, and even with my generally nasal voice, un verre vin blanc, wasn't the easiest sentences, but I made in and you will too!

Jinx,

I entered college on March, which meant I moved across the country and began a new life in Sao Paulo. The first semester was way too busy to keep my French studies going, so it stationed where it was.

However, I've resumed studying last week, and I'll begin posting here again this week!
