I wrote a positive comment referring to the newspaper article as a reaction on PolyglotPal's You Tube channel and he just deleted it.

Fasulye, I never deleted your comment on my channel. I never got the chance to respond because I was in
France and didn't have a great deal of free time. I never intended to offend you or anyone else. Well I wouldn't exactly call this a "fruitful discussion" more just posting bits of

Welcome. I just enjoyed hearing your interview on the BBC, well done. Of course people can naturally be curious or even picky, suspicious and jealous.....but your love of languages is beyond doubt. How well do you actually know your languages?

Don't worry about it Michael! In terms of my languages, I tend not to use the word "fluency" because it often
gives people false expectations about just how well you speak. *For "high level" languages --meaning ones I can converse, read, write in, etc without many problems -- I would say French, Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew, German and Latin (though obviously the last one is no longer spoken). *After that, the next gradation would be Mandarin, Italian, Indonesian, Dutch, Yiddish, Hindi, Swahili, Russian and Pashto (meaning I'm at least intermediate or higher and I can carry on a conversation/translate in both directions). *I would say I'm at a more basic level with languages like Croatian, Turkish, Wolof, Hausa and Xhosa, though I have dedicated a fair bit of time to studying each of them. *I have a few "outlier" languages after that such as Ojibwe and Kurdish which I have never learned with the goal of speaking in mind -In response to Ellsworth, I've just listed those two because the language tool here is a bit time-consuming for me :) Edited by Polyglotpal on 30 March 2012 at 12:44am 4 persons have voted this message useful |
