http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_wizarding_terms_in _translations_of_Harry_Potter - this page has a fantastic list of HP terms in various languages.

http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Harry_Potter_in_translatio n_series - character names, locations and links.

Hope this helps those that use HP for language learning!

That's a great link, thanks very much!

That will be definitely useful when I start reading my first HP book in Russian...

In character names, they left out that the Spanish Crookshanks becomes Patizambo (knock-kneed?) in book 3 for one brief moment. There's a part that goes something like "Sólo era Patizambo pero ... ¿sólo era Crookshanks?"

The French translator put in so much time and thought into translating the names, while the Spanish translator opted not to translate anything:

Hogwarts (French: poudlard - pig's fleas), Spanish = Hogwarts
Boggart - french: Épouvantard, Spanish: Boggart
Demenentor - French: détraqueur, Spanish: dementor
Sorting Hat - French: Choixpeau (Choix =choice, chapeau= hat) , Spanish: El sombrero seleccionador (selecting hat)
Muggle - French: Moldu (masculine, always capitalised), Spanish: Muggle
Snitch - French: le Vif d'or ("vif" = quick, brisk, vivid ; idea of speed) Spanish: la Snitch dorada
Ravenclaw - French: Serdaigle, Spanish: Ravenclaw
Hufflepuff - French: Poufsouffle, Spanish: Hufflepuff
Slytherin - French: Serpentard, Spanish: Slytherin
