I've been learning Dutch for about 3 months (on and off, due to my lack of time). My goal was to get at least some basic fluency. Unfortunately I must say I couldn't do as much as I wanted. But here is an overview of pros and cons of this "Fluent in 3 months" challenge:  Cool learning material with audio-files, exercises, info, etc.
Language that had been for a long time on my "whishlist".
Area of usage is not far away from my home.
Swiss-German, German and English as positive factors which make the whole thing easier.
 Lack of time!!!
First language being learned without a tutor/teacher...
Lack of opportunities to use the target language.
Lack of immersion
Retrospective: I probably could have done much better, but at least I didn't lose the motivation and I still like the Dutch language. Best description I've ever heard of a Dutchman speaking German (this was me) was "putzig". I have a horrid dislike of Dutch accents in any language, I find them monotone, flat and grunty. The Dutch accent in English to my ears sounds horribly stilted and there's nothing worse than a professor teaching us if he has a fairly strong accent (the difference can be enormous if it's fairly close to regular English). I remember having computer science lectures with a Dutch professor at university. He
spoke German with a strong Dutch accent, and he was a quite funny person too. I agree with you, when you say that the Dutch accent in English sounds stilted. I prefer Dutch people speaking German, that sounds sweet and "putzig" (agreed!). Just think of Rudi Carrell or Sylvie van der Vaart speaking German :-D Dutch vocabulary is still a mystery to me. There are of course many many words I understand immediately. Then there are words I understand when reading them ("analysing" the structure = "ahh, that comes from ...") and there are word positions that are not natural for German, but for Swiss German. The best way to speak Dutch properly (for me) is to "think" in Swiss German (in the beginning - later on, I think in the language I want to speak). It took me some time to understand why in Dutch there is the word "er" in the middle of the sentence, where in German there is no equivalent. For example: In de wagen is er plaats vor vier personen. = Im Wagen ist Platz für 4 Personen. Met deze bril zie je er super uit. - Mit dieser Brille siehst du super aus. Dat ziet er heel mooi uit. - Das sieht sehr schön aus. Funny was the word for "to look" = "kijken". In Berlin they say: Kiek mal! ("Look!")  New project: Swedish
Finally I managed to enrol for a language course (at my university). It was not difficult to choose which course to take, since there were just few options for me (standard languages, such as English, Spanish, French, Italian). I took the Swedish course. It will start in September, so there's still some time to improve my Dutch. I'm looking forward to three intensive weeks of daily Swedish lessons, working hard at home too, to achieve a good A1 level at the end. Luckily there is the option to take further Swedish courses - they offer everything from A1 to C1. Certification is an option too, but I don't know how far this UNICERT certificates are accepted. NL: Mae, ik heb wat laat ontdekt dat je mijn Spaans recept in mijn "Cooking Log" had gecorrigeerd. Dat is wel nuttig voor mij, want ik wilde toch inderdaad een gerecht met blauwe(!) paprika koken! Mocht je hier wat in het Nederlands willen schrijven dan ben ik graag bereid tot correcties. Je zult dan niet de eerste zijn, want bij andere mensen heb ik ook al hun Nederlands gecorrigeerd hier in het forum.

Dutch: FLR Technique?
Now that I have made quite some progress learning Dutch, I just realised that my passive skills are way higher than my active skills. It would be great to try out Moses' FLR Technique to improve even more my conversational skills in Dutch. Any instructions?  Polyglot meeting in Berlin
It was fun to meet Sprachprofi and Poliglotta80 (and another student) today. We spent about two hours speaking multiple languages, especially French and German, some Italian and a little bit of Spanish. I guess we just lost the overview about the languages we all had in common. We enjoyed a delicious Italian pizza at an genuine Italian restaurant. Meeting other language enthusiasts in real life is another step to keep up the work I do. I know I have mentioned it several times already, but before knowing this forum, it was not easy to handle this "language mania"... I really enjoyed the meeting, even if it was so short. If you people read this, be sure that I wouldn't refuse to meet you again ;-) Thanks for being there today! EDIT: As a side effect I had a lot of time to learn Dutch while travelling to Berlin!
