Castle ep, 23-24 BOOKS 1-2.5 Agatha Christie "Temoin indesirable" (250 pages) So, I have again looked through lots of episodes of the series "Castle" (the rest - so now we will pass to someting else), and I have read my first book in French. Or my first 2 1/2 books in French -according to the new rules. I was suprized to see how quickly I flew through the book. I am almost a little sad that I did not include conversations in the challenge, since I talked a lot in French in Paris this week. And I was amazed at how much my French had improved just since May, when I started the challenge. Between the many hours of series in French, and reading the book, I was totally up to speed in French from the moment I set foot on French soil. Usually I need an hour or so to speak French in the taxi before I get into town to make it run smoothely, but now I talked like a machine gun from the first moment. And I must have said something right, because the taxi driver (one of the hottest ones I have seen in a long time) gave me his private number and e-mailadress and suggested we meet up on my next trip to Paris. Given that I am a married woman, I just smiled politely and did not give him my card. My husband could not stop laughing when I told him about it. Absolutely every person I struck up conversation with complimented me for my French though, and one even asked me if I was French. Big smiles all around :-) I also noted on the second day there, that I was talking to myself in French. That usually takes 3-4 days, so this language bath thing really works. I got some more series for me and my daughter to watch - most notably "How I met your mother" - 6 seasons of it. I really hope we will enjoy it! I also found a solution to my dilemma of wanting to read about Russian history and culture, but not feeling I could take time way from it: I'll just do it in French!! I therefore bought - a book on Russian history in French, of almost 1000 pages, so it should count for almost 10 books - a book about the Transsiberian railway - a book on Chechnya written by the late Anna Politovskaia - a book on Russian culture - a book on St Petersburg - and a book called "Les Femmes du roi. French are generally not fond of languages, even English. So, they are very happy to communicate with a foreigner that speaks French really well. (Le beurre et l'argent du beurre.) :-) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Finally, I'll do it in both languages: Spanish and English.
It's a huge challenge but I know I can reach these numbers. I've already done it with movies and counting 100 pages = 1 book, it's also possible with books. BOOKS SPANISH 1,9. I've been watching episodes of The Office, Modern Family and Star Trek (Next Generation) dubbed in Russian. Sometimes the English is too loud in the background and it took me a while to get used to concentrating on the Russian.
Reading is going a lot better now that I got Harry Potter (book 2, reviews said the first book was poorly translated). I had been reading high literature (War and Peace--not too bad since I was using a parallel translation) and 12 Chairs (not the graded version, the actual novel). These books were just too difficult for me to read with ease. Now that I have a simpler novel, I feel that I am truly getting comprehensible input--and my speed has increased dramatically so that now I can reasonably expect to read at least 100 (and maybe 200) pages a week. The best thing is that after I read for a while in the morning, speaking comes much easier. It seems that I just automatically start thinking in the language after reading. The biggest slow down for me has been writing, not so much because it is terribly difficult, but because I am having a hard time thinking about what to write. The biggest problem is that I don't want to write about my personal life if I'm going to be posting it on the Internet (lang-8). Does anyone else have this problem? For people doing the writing portion, what do you usually write about? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Welcome, Aurellia! You are not dead, you just found a new purpose in life! :-) I have added you to the participant list for all three challenges, so if you have registred on Twitter, and told Kanewai where you will be doing your updates, you are good to go! The intention was to have the updates here for the Advanced Challenge, and in the thread for Super Challenge Registration and Uodates for the regular challenges, but some like to write speacial blogs, or can be followed also on their TAC logs. Wow. Somehow I missed this. Just updated everything on the Twitter page. Very cool going from hand-counted tallies to electronic (ranked) list. It turns out I was counting incorrectly anyway since I missed rule updates. My written work went down to 1 since I missed the 200 word requirement :(. My films went down a bit too as I somehow was thinking 1hr=1film. I joined a while ago and can't seem to find the information about notifying Kanewai. How do I do this (I'm in the ASDM Challenge)? REGISTRATION
Language: Japanese Challenge: Advanced Super Duper Mega Challenge Level: Advanced learner. I don't know the European scale, but I've passed JPLT 1. Comments: Of course this is laughably ambitious. However, I read Japanese every day, as I need to read Japanese academic articles to write my thesis. Am I right that the rules have changed so that every 100 pages is one book? If that's the case, then 200 "books" (20,000 pages - about 30 a day) is not as demented a goal as it sounds. And why not be ambitious? EDIT: Name of challenge. Too many scary adjectives!
