Does anyone happen to know much about good Japanese rock/indieish music?
Theres wayyyyy too much out there on j-pop which is quite universally awful. But from what little I've heard there is definitely some good Japanese music.

There's a load of good J-rock. Here are some songs I like:
Shiina Ringo - 本能
Karasu - 夢
Mongol 800 - 小さな恋のうた
Gackt - Another World
Shiina Ringo - ここでキスして
Onmyouza - 甲賀忍法帳
Bump of Chicken - 天体観測
Gackt - Redemption

Hi Tyr,
do you like the links proposed by lichtraus, or are you looking for something a bit more violent?
(I really liked Shiina Ringo-本能 somehow!)

I've posted some links to Japanese indie bands in a similar thread here. Hope you find something enjoyable.

Orange Range - Asterisk
My personal J-Rock favourite - even if it already has almost 8 years.
+ some kind of "poppy Prodigy-like like rock" or "rocky Prodigy-like pop", respectively.

I would highly recommend 犬神サーカス団 (Inugami Circus Dan). They are a fabulous hard rock band that one of
my Japanese friends got me hooked on.
