In the 1990s I was staying at a campsite in Moravia, went for a walk and became lost. I saw a signpost with the words K Zamku. I knew and know little Czech, but guessed on the basis of Russian that it meant "to the castle", and the campsite was next to a castle. I followed the sign and found the castle, and then the campsite.
Although not to be relied on too much, the vocabulary relationships among Slavic languages are indeed close. Probably roughly on a par with the Latin-derived Romance languages, or perhaps if anything a little closer to each other than the Romance family's members are.
I was idly flicking through a Slovak-German dictionary just now and was struck by how much written Slovak vocabulary I understood, triangulated as it is between my pretty good knowledge of Russian and my "heritage" Polish.
(Edited to add an additional remark)
