Sorry, I should have said "friction" instead of affrication. (I will correct above.) R can be a fricative or an approximant, but friction is never as intense as in the recording. Actually, it's probably too devoiced as well. I think l is pronounced a bit too far back, with the tip of the tongue, when it's usually pronounced further up front, with the tip of the tongue very near or at the teeth. Is there any difference between French "l" and Russian soft л? The first one isn't

This is not my official answer ;) but I'd say that there is more weight on the tip of the tongue for the French l, but that the weight is a bit further back in Russian, where the palate starts to raise. But I don't really speak Russian -- how does that sound to you? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Well, I finally got the nerve to do it. The fact that my grammar is bad is proof that this was unscripted. This video is embarrassing, but I'm trying to build my tolerance for embarrassment anyway.

Congratulations on overcoming your fear! You did well, and got better as you went along. The shi and chi sounds are the most obvious problem and I'd work on that first. Then, you could improve your flow, but I think that this will likely quickly improve now that you've decided to move from shadowing to actual production.
