I agree that classes can make sure you get time to study. I also find the beginner stages of learning a language, when you can't really DO anything with it and have much to memorize, hard to manage on my own.

Out of curiosity what University do you go to? err this is off topic and a bit personal so if you want to PM me, I'm interested in looking into it from what you said.
