This is the thread for registering and making updates of your achievements for: THE SUPER CHALLENGE!
And what may you ask is the Super Challenge (unless you have followed the initial thread and know already :-)
The Super Challenge started on 1st of May 2012 and ends on 31st of December 2013. Those of you who enter in 2013 may want to register with just half challenges, but you may take full ones if you are up to it.
The challenge entails:
- 100 films
- 100 books
- in 20 months
There are however possibilities to do variations.
- You can do half a Super Challenge which would entail either 100 books, 100 films or 50 of each.
- Instead of one full Super Challenge in one language, you can also do two (or more) half Super Challenges, and decide how you want to combine them.
- If you really want to give yourself a challenge, you could do The Super Duper Challenge – which in addition to the elements mentioned above would entail 100 units of 30 minutes conversation practice. Since this is much more difficult to achieve and measure, this is just for the really adventurous ones, but I leave the option open. And for the crazy ones we also have the Super Duper Mega Challenge, where you also add 100 essays - the length of which you determine.
To register, you state:
LANGUAGE:
CHALLENGE: ( FULL, HALF, SUPER DUPER)
CURRENT LEVEL:
COMMENTS: Any comments you feel like adding as to your reasons for choice of language, type of challenge or material or your expectations for the outcome.
Those of you who will use your TAC logs, or who have created own logs for this particular challenge are welcome to link to them as well.
OBS: PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS THE THREAD FOR REGISTERING AND UPDATING YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AND FOR GIVING ENCOURAGEMENTS TO YOU FELLOW SUPER CHALLENGERS ONLY.
IF YOU HAVE MORE QUESTIONS SEE HERE:
SUPER CHALLENGE TOTAL INFO REFERENCE THREAD
IF YOU HAVE EVEN MORE QUESTIONS PLEASE GO TO THIS THREAD:

-----------
If you are a beginner, you can start with the films. And it counts even if you see it with subtitles in your own language, or even if you see the film in your own language but with TL subtitles.
If you start out with the 100 films this year, I am sure you will be able to do the 100 books next year.
If you just have 5 books and 5 films then your read them 20 times. Though my guess is that by the time you have read/seen them 5 times, you WILL get other films or books.
So the rules would be the following:
- Every film counts as long as they have at least voice or subtitles in the TL
- If it lasts less than 45 minutes (a show/series) it counts as half a film. If it lasts for more than three hours it counts as two films.(I recommend that you count 2 45 minutes episodes as one film though). I think the bot counts 90 minutes for a film.
- If you want to use podcasts or audiobooks, 1 hour and a half is the equivalence of 1 film.
- Every book counts. If it is less than a 100 pages, it counts as half a book. Obs, the bot counts every 10 pages, and counts 100 pages as a book - so if you read a book of 500 pages it will count as 5 books)
- You can do fiction or any other material – a documentary on whales, or a book about gardening works just as well as a novel.
- You can see the same films/read the same books again and again
- With parallel books you count the pages in your TL – minimum 100 pages to make it count as a book.
- A manga from 100 to 500 pages counts as 1/5 of a book, 500 upwards counts as 2/5 of a book
- A children's book with large letter, pictures and few pages counts as 1/5th of a book. If it seems too big to count for only 1/5th, use your best judgement.
- You can be at a B1 maximum when the challenge starts
- The material covered for this challenge can be counted and done in parallel with both the 6WC and the Tadoku challenge (so if you participate in all three you could at one point count the same book three times :-)
- If you want to join later than May1st 2012 or end before December 31st 2013, you are welcome.
- If you do L-R it is up to you whether you want to count it as reading (in which case 100-499 pages would count as one book) or if you want to count it as film, in which case 1 hour and a half would count as one film.
- If you enter book pages, the bot counts pages in another way than the rule I have set up here, - don't worry. Just use the system which motivates you the most.
But the most important thing about this particular challenge, is that you do this for yourself, and any material you cover which you would not have covered had you not participated in this challenge – means success.
I do not know how many of us who will succeed – life will probably get in the way for some of us, and there will be days, weeks, even months where we don’t get much done.
I do however have this mental image which probably sounds idiotic, of those of who still are still hanging in there running (or stumbling) over the finishing line together, after having made a monumental effort, and having taken their target language to a whole new level.
So ladies, gentlemen and minors: Let the registration commence, and let not the best man win: Let as many of us as possible win!
PLEASE NOTE: An angel has come to answer my prayers and has made a bot for this challenge. It would be easiest if everyone registered also on the bot as we can then see where we all are at a glance. I therefore invite you all to register BOTH IN THIS THREAD AND AT THE BOT.
The Super Challenge is just for languages up to B1. In 2013 we merge the threads for that and for the Advanced Super Challenge, which is for all levels.
------------
THE ADVANCED SUPER CHALLENGE
Most of the rules as for the regular Super Challenge - the main difference being that for this challenge you do:
200 books
200 films in
20 months.
Only full challenges allowed- half challenges would defeat the purpose, but you chose whether you want:
The Advanced Super Challenge (200 books, 200 films)
The Advanced Super Duper Challenge - where you add 100 hours conversation or 200 written texts.
The Advanced Super Duper Mega Challenge where you have 200 books, 200 films, 100 hours conversation and 200 written texts.
In any level you like - but due to the amount of work - intended for the B2-C2.
Register in this thread with language, type of level and type of challenge.
Good luck!
OBS. Since 8 out of 12 months are passed, and we do not have Advanced half challenges, those who want to, may chose to do only the proportion equivalent to the time left - which would be 120 book/films etc. if you start on January 1st.

I'll be unofficially aiming for the Italian Advanced challenge then :) I already have 100+ movies but only 8 books.
Currently I'm watching football in Italian (bless EPL with their matches on Christmas and New Year) and reading a Warsaw guidebook in Polish :)

So far, I have:
11 Spanish films (50/50 challenge)
18,5 films and 1 book for French (200/200)
5 books and 76, likely more since I didn't count some recent films in, for English
(200/200)
nothing for German (50/50)
an important question. I thought the challenge was ending at the end of the year 2013 and
therefore lasted more than 12 months. Did I misunderstand the rules?

Not at all. It ends at the end of 2013. I just wanted a new thread to make a fresh start and to combine the
threads for the two challenges. Otherwise it is business as usual :-)

I registered this morning for Half Challenge with only books. Now I realized that audiobooks could be counted as films, so I might want to change it for 50 books and 50 films. I will think about it today and make the decision. (And if I decide to change, I might need some help with that tweet. I almost got late from work because I spent so much time fighting with the tweeting thing to get registered :) )
LANGUAGE: Spanish
CHALLENGE: Half
CURRENT LEVEL: A2(?)
Here is my TAC 2013 log, I will include my SC there.

Additional Registration
LANGUAGE: Spanish
CHALLENGE: Half (50 Books/50 Films)
CURRENT LEVEL: Practically zero
COMMENTS: I did a one-week course about 8 years ago and a bit of reading more recently, but am not A1 stage yet in Spanish. I've been finding the Super Challenge really helpful for the languages I'm doing it in, and said to myself that if I got up to schedule with the films by the end of 2012 I could start with another language. I was torn between Spanish and Italian, but chose Spanish as I think it will be more useful to me - the reason I was going to go for Italian is that I have no Italian at all, so it might be a better experiment.
My plan is to watch films (mostly dubbed TV to start with) for the first few months, and then add graded readers with audio and comics. The only non-media learning I plan to do is a grammar workbook that I'll start in late March. I also plan to experiment with subtitles - at the moment I'm watched with Dutch ones, but will watched with some English and some Spanish as all three are available on the DVDs I have at the moment.

January 2013 update
DUTCH
Books 57.1/200
14. Moord in de pastorie
15. Het magische schip
16. Leve het socialism!
17. Ziel van de duivel
18. In Kaapstad kan je niet verdwalen

Flikken Maastricht Season 5
Flikken Season 4 and 5
Paul Vlaanderen en het mysterie van de verzonnen dood
Sint
De bende van Oss
De zomer van 45 8 part mini-series
Leve het socialism! was great - the memoir of a Chinese factory worker and her struggle to get out of the factory and learn English.
De Zomer van 45 was a very good mini-series about the children of Canadian soldiers and Dutch mothers during the liberation of the Netherlands and how this affected their lives from then on.
JAPANESE

13. 10分で読めるお話二年生
14. Manga: One Piece vol 10, 2 Kindaichi mangaa, Major volumes 20 and 21

30. Bamboo Blade e15-18
31. Bamboo Blade e19-22
32. Bamboo Blade e23-26
33. Ouran Host Club e9-12
Nothing really standout on the book side, though this does include 2 actual books that I found easier to read that the last set of books.
On the films, the drama series 科捜研の女 is about a female forensic scientist in Kyoto. This has hard-coded subs that I'm trying to ignore - unfortunately that come across too much of the screen to cover up. I watched this a few years ago and really enjoyed it.
FRENCH
Books 16.5/50
8. Candide ou l'optimisme
9. Rendez-vous à Bagdad
Films 20/50
16. Am stam gram
17. La plume empoisonnee
18. M*A*S*H s1 e19-20 & Blanc, Bleu, Rouge e1
19. Blanc, Bleu, Rouge e2-3
20. Blanc, Bleu, Rouge e4-5
All of these were really good - Rendez-vous à Bagdad is the first non Poirot of Marple Agatha Christie I've read and was very entertaining. Blanc, Blue, Rouge is set during the French revolution and is a fairly entertaining story, though I'm not keen on most of the characters - it has the advantage of having exact subs though which meant I got more of it. Still one episode to watch.
SPANISH
Books 0/50
Films 1/50
1. Without a Trace S1 E1-2
Not much to say here - entertaining enough. Watched with Dutch subs, so I go the plot and a handful of the Spanish words.
