Hoi Allemaal,
I'm a new member here, and joined up to participate in the TAC 2013. My name's Marie and I live in the South of England. I have been studying Dutch very loosely for the past 3 months, and need to kick it up a gear because I'm heading to Amsterdam in February for 5 weeks. This is my first attempt at language learning, except a few years of wonderfully useful "J'ai un chat"-type French lessons at school (mostly all sadly forgotten now). I will continue to study the language once back from Amsterdam, and would love to be conversational by the end of the year. I've completed the Pimsleur 1-30 lessons, and am currently working through the Colloquial Dutch book. At the moment I can do two things: I can either follow very basic conversations, or, due to my great love of cheesy Dutch pop music, I can serenade someone in overly poetic language. Useful, huh? Great that you're going to study Dutch. Even better that you're going to Amsterdam, it's a beautiful city! What are your going to do in Amsterdam? Hallo Kez! Ik heb daar een stageplaats. Ik zal voor vier weken werken, en doorbreng een
week Amsterdam aan het verkennen. Ik ben reeds zo spannend! Dank je wel - als ik heb mijn Nederlands een beetje meer verbeterd, dan ik graag met je willen oefenen zou. (I hope that makes some kind of sense!) ___ My Dutch work today - I completed chapter 7 of Colloquial Dutch, which taught me about using the imperative, writing letters, separable verbs and the use of 'om te'. I struggle with the latter two, so will have to review this. I also watched the first episode of de nieuwe Wie Is De Mol? with English subtitles. I can certainly understand everything you wrote, and my production skills are fairly low, but I suspect that at least
the following should be different: "Ik ben reeds zo spannend!" I thought "spannend" here means "exciting," and you were going for "excited" (e.g., opgewonden)? "dan ik graag met je willen oefenen zou." This was a little hard for me to follow at first. I think a better word order might be "dan zou ik graag met je willen oefenen." It's pretty good! I understood everything!
Few small things: Ik zal voor vier weken werken en doorbreng een week Amsterdam aan het verkennen. - I would say: Ik ga vier weken werken en daarna een week Amsterdam verkennen. Ik ben reeds zo spannend! - If you mean: "I'm looking forward to it/I am excited", you can say: "Ik heb er (heel erg veel) zin in" als ik heb mijn Nederlands een beetje meer verbeterd, dan ik graag met je willen oefenen zou. - als ik mijn Nederlands een beetje meer heb verbeterd, zou ik graag met je willen oefenen. Very small mistakes, but a really good job! So you got an internship, nice! What kind of work? Amsterdam is a very beautiful city, you'll love it. Do some research before you go so you have a list of things you want to visit. There's enough to do there. And you're listening to 100% NL, is there any music on there that you enjoy? Try: Armand( - Ben ik te min) & Spinvis. 2 Dutch musicians I actually enjoy listening to haha. They sing in dutch and they don't sing fast, so you might pick up some words. I really appreciate the corrections, dank je wel.
Oops, I think I did mean to write opgewonden - thanks geoffw. And I think I see what I did with "dan ik graag met je willen oefenen zou". For some reason, my brain associated the "dat" rule with "dan", where I was taught to send the trigger verb to the end of the sentence after the word 'dat'. A quick question about word order from my studies today, if anyone wouldn't mind answering: Is it equally correct to say 'Geef me de boter alsjeblieft' and 'Geef me alsjeblieft de boter'? The internship is with a television production company in Amsterdam-Noord. I have booked a little apartment in Jordaan, and will be taking the ferry there each day. I will definitely listen to Armand and Spinvis, thanks for the recommendation. I enjoy most of the music on 100% NL. I'm a big Marco Borsato fan, which is lucky because every other song they play seems to be him! I downloaded all his albums and listen often. I also enjoy Guus Meeuwis, Anouk, Gers Pardoel and Trijntje Oosterhuis (I have tickets to see her in Amsterdam - Ik heb er zin in!) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

'Geef me de boter alsjeblieft' and 'Geef me alsjeblieft de boter'
Yes, they are both correct. Other ways of saying it would be: - Mag ik de boter, alsjeblieft? / Mag ik alsjeblieft de boter? (It's the difference between: Give me the butter please/Can I have the butter please) "a little apartment in Jordaan" You have made me a very jealous Dutch boy now. You will surely love it there, Jordaan is the most beautiful part of Amsterdam (according to me ;) ). Marco Borsato, Guus Meeuwis, Anouk, Gers Pardoel and Trijntje Oosterhuis are all big in Holland. I personally am not a big fan, but if you like that 'kind' of music you should try out: Jan Smit, Nick & Simon & de 3J's. Veel succes met leren! 1 person has voted this message useful | |
