This is a log of my Polish studies. I'll keep track of my progress here and as I'm learning the language on my own, I hope that the log and the support of the forum community will help me keep studying and not to give up too soon :)
I’ve been thinking of taking up Polish for quite a while. What makes it appealing to me is that it’s a kind of two-faced language for me. It has many words and grammar topics that are similar in my native Russian language. However, Polish can also take you by surprise when a basic Polish word has nothing in common with the Russian equivalent. I can foresee that my learning path will be full of surprises and discoveries.
I also like the Polish phonetics with its sh sounds and nasal vowels. It reminds me of Portuguese, but seems to be more challenging.
I hope that in 2013 I’ll learn enough to understand some Polish spoken in films and be able to go by when I travel to Poland. Let's say I'm aiming at level B1.

I work full-time and come home rather late in the evening, so I schedule around 30 minutes every day for Polish. I’m also taking Japanese classes in a language school, so I should allow some time for Japanese homework during a week. So, I’m going for the “better less, but often rather than a lot, but once a month”.
I’ve got hold of some textbooks that I’m going to start with, but I may cross out some of them later on if I find that I have too many.
So my current Polish textbooks are:
1. Cześć, jak się masz? 1 (Student’s book and Workbook) + audio
2. Uczmy sie Polskiego 1 - Let's Learn Polish – a video course
3. Hurra!!! Po Polsku 1 (Student’s book and Workbook) + audio
4. Gramatyka? Dlaczego nie?! A1 – an exercise book
and some additional textbooks in Russian:
5. Польский язык. Самоучитель для начинающих. Ананьева,Тихомирова
6. Практический курс польского языка. Кротовская, Лесная, Селиванова
7. Самоучитель польского языка. Василевская, Розенталь.
