Dagane, what you say is true, it's always possible to forget words you don't often use.
I forget even Italian words sometimes, and I'm not saying Anki is useless for these
languages, just that Anki (or a similar system) is a life-saver and absolutely
necessary to keep up for languages that are further removed.
Non-Indo-European languages do add a special dimension of difficulty to vocabulary
study. For example, if I study an Italian word German-to-Italian, I don't need to study
it Italian-to-German - if I can produce it, I can always understand it, too. For
languages that are further removed, I always have to study both directions, because
active knowledge does not always imply passive knowledge.
And my goal isn't 50 books in foreign languages - 50 books is my general reading
target, and of those I want to read at least 30 books in foreign languages other than
English. I think reading 50+ books in a year is not too difficult if I set my mind to
it, but reading 30+ foreign books will be a challenge because I read much more slowly.
Following a discussion with Arekkusu, I shall now use
our TAC Tandem log in order to log all my
progress, so as to avoid double-posts and split conversations. This log is closed.
