In 1999 Le Monde asked its readers Quels livres sont restés dans votre mémoire? I pulled a lot of my reading material from their resulting list of the 100 Books of the Century. The list felt much more personal than the lists like "100 Best Novels."
Classics I've read and liked:
- Du côte de chez Swann. Marcel Proust, 1913
- Madame Bovary. Gustave Flaubert, 1856.
- Le Grand Meaulnes. Alain-Fournier, 1913.
- Le hussard sur le toit. Jean Giono, 1951
- Bel ami. Guy de Maupassant, 1885.
- Germinal. Émile Zola, 1885
- La symphonie pastorale. André Gide, 1919
I tried to read some Balzac, but didn't enjoy him & never finished. Zola is the most epic; if you liked Les Mis give him a try. His novels are a lot more realistic and tightly plotted than Hugo's. Gide and de Maupassant are great short story and novella writers. Jules Verne is good, but there's too much filler for me ... 20,000 leagues had endles pages of the characters looking out the window and talking about the fish they saw. And Proust is both brilliant and, at times, exhausting.
I've had a couple recommendations for each of these, and they're at the top of my list:
-Mémoires d'Hadrien. Marguerite Yourcenar,1951
-La chartreuse de Parme. Stendhal, 1839
-L'écume des jours, Boris Vian 1947

Excellent. I happen to have picked up "Thérèse Raquin" at a thrift store just a few weeks ago, so i guess i'll read that
next!
I'm also interested in Ionesco's work (i forget who made the suggestion) because one of his plays is being studied in
the french tv show i watch (30 vies). I'll try to find it at my library.
