My long term goal is polyglottery with high level of fluency.
I know my goals are very ambitious, but my deadlines are flexible and extend far into the future. In the end, que será, será. Native fluency: ✓ English, ✓ Russian Adv. fluency (C2+, 2023): Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Ukrainian, RSL Basic fluency (C1+, 2030): Mandarin, Portuguese, Italian, Greek High intermediate (B2+, 2035): Hebrew, Polish, Arabic Wanderlusts: Esperanto, Latin, ASL, Ancient Egyptian, Sanskrit, Ancient Greek, Old English, Church Slavonic Considering: Belorussian, Korean, Malaysian/Indonesian, Cantonese, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Vietnamese, Thai, Persian, Turkish, Swahili, Romanian, Kazakh, Tatar, Dutch, Hungarian, Czech, Swedish, etc. My priorities are heavily oriented towards passive skills (reading (by far), then listening). I'm only interested in communicating with others once I'm very comfortable with the language. But speaking out loud to myself is very important at the start too. Paraphrasing Iversen, I'm happy learning bits and pieces and waiting for the epiphany moment. -------------------------------------------------------- My goals for the following year, 2014 (I prefer to set ambitious goals): 700+ hours total for the year, read 15+ short books, 20+ movies, 30+ hours of tv shows B1+/B2 in Spanish, French, German, 3-5 books and movies in each language C1+/C2 in RSL, keep learning words, find more resources, get more practice B2/B2+ in Ukrainian, get some foundation, then dive in reading books and watching tv/movies A2/A2+ in Japanese, keep learning basic kanji and basic grammar My main priority this year is consistency: to get used to studying and maintaining all these languages at the same time without burnout, without dropping the ball, and without taking long breaks, as I've so often done in the past. I've been following this forum for over 3 years, lurking at first, getting more and more involved lately. I plan to use this log for maybe weekly progress reports. Mostly for myself. At the moment my TL levels are too low to write comfortably. I've decided to give team TAC 2014 a try. So I'll be joining TAC teams for Spanish (Exploradores), French (Triomphe), and German (Spaß). Also, I'm planning on following teams for Japanese (旅立ち/tabidachi), Ukrainian (Sokoły / Соколи) and Spanish (Lobo) as an observer. Techniques:
Personally, I like to get a decent foundation in basics of the language (pronunciation, writing, grammar) then progress towards learning more words to be able to read while listening to music. That's why I like starting with Michel Thomas and Pimsleur and a basic grammar book, then switch to graded readers or anki sentences, lots of music, and then subtitled videos. After the initial A1 phase, Anki is by far the most useful tool in my opinion. Resources: Anki. Dictionaries imported into Anki. Sentences imported into Anki. Lots of music on repeat for listening practice. Graded readers then native books for reading practice. Movies, TV shows, and youtube. First with subtitles then without. Great LL programs: Michel Thomas, Pimsleur, Teach Yourself, Linguaphone. Tedious LL programs: MT Vocabulary, For Dummies, FSI, DLI. Untested LL programs: Assimil, Living Language. I highly recommend Ilya Frank's reading method (it's basically a way to structure parallel texts with inline traslations with hyperliteral translations) and parallel translation books he edited/translated (they're premade for Russian-L1). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

English, currently advanced native fluency
Goal: keep expanding rare word vocabulary. Resources: Anki The script I wrote consolidated words from 5+ sources of rare English words into Anki: Grandiloquent Dictionary, Luficerous Logolepsy, phrontistery, Ultrahigh IQ 10k, Scorpio Tales. Now I'm slowly wading through them in Anki. Also, I maintain a list of unknown English words I encounter in life. Considering writing a script to import a large dictionary (ex. dictionary.com) into Anki and go through it. ------------------------------------------------------ Russian, currently advanced native fluency Goal: keep expanding rare word vocabulary. RSL/РЖЯ (Russian Sign Language/Русский Жестовый Язык), currently intermediate
Goal: keep expanding vocabulary, C1+/C2 by the time of my next trip to Russia. Resources: Anki, DVDs, online The script I wrote imported movie clips from digitgestus.com into Anki. Now I'm slowly learning them in Anki. Plus, I have a 4 DVDs and 1 CD with study materials that I peruse from time to time.
