Thanks tarvos, I had no idea :) I remain dubious as to whether the BBC knew either though or whether they just got lucky this time! I'm currently (slowly) reading Rebecca West's enormous book about Yugoslavia, 'Black Lamb and Grey Falcon' and one of the things I am finding irritating is that she has adopted a similar system to Serbian of trying to spell the foreign names as they would be pronounced by an English person. So, for example, we have to read about 'Tsetinye' rather than 'Cetinje'. I understand why she did it, but I still find it quite frustrating to read. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Having said that I was going to go back to reading translations, this morning I started reading another original Croatian novel 'Sanjao sam slonove' (I dreamed of elephants). I'd like to think I'm not normally so inconsistent that I change my mind from day to day like that; my intention was to start reading some translations of books by CJ Sansom. I knew the books were in a series and I knew I didn't have one of the books in that series, but what I didn't realise/had forgotten was that it was the first book in the series that I was missing. My boyfriend has bought it for me and I'm going to get it as a birthday/Christmas present, so it doesn't really make sense to start reading the series out of order right now. 'Sanjao sam slonove' is my only other remaining unread paper book in Croatian right now, so it was an easy choice.
The good news is that so far it seems fairly understandable and the characters are actually speaking in Croatian, which is a good start :) I've only read 25 pages so far so I'll have to see how it goes. I'm on 1253 pages for Tadoku at the moment. As I ran out of reading material for my commute yesterday I spent some time listening to the audiobook 'Istorije slučaja'. It seems quite disjointed to me but I have been listening to it erratically over the past six weeks whenever I have nothing better to do, so that's probably my fault rather than the authors! 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

I'm really enjoying 'Sanjao sam slonove'. I'm already thinking that when I get to the end I'm going to go back to the beginning and read it again, more slowly this time and looking up the words I don't know, because as I'm reading it I get the impression that it is really well written. Although to be fair, most books would probably feel really well written after Twilight and Fifty Shades :)
I watched two episodes of 'Bitange i Princeze' last night. Somehow I succeeded in tuning into the first one really well and could follow whole chunks of dialogue at a time without missing anything. By the second one I was getting tired and my attention was starting to slip, so I didn't do so well. I listened to a little bit more of the audiobook 'Istorije slucaja' on the way to work this morning and my film count has now crept up to 50. The SC page is tantalisingly telling me that there are 'only' five films until the next star, but five films still feels like a lot to me! 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I've read another 27 pages of 'Sanjao sam slonove'. 1304 pages for Tadoku.
I would have read more except that my train home last night, which normally has three carriages, was inexplicably reduced to two and so there wasn't room to swing a cat, much less to read a book. Then and this morning I've listened to another 76 minutes of the 'Istorije slucaja' audiobook, although it still isn't really grabbing me because it seems to be made up of three different stories, which makes the whole thing very disjointed. I am assuming that by the end of the book all the stories will turn out to be linked, but I think it's going to take a lot of perseverance to get that far. Didn't watch any more Croatian TV last night as my laptop upgraded to Windows 8.1 against my will. I was expecting to have massive problems, which is what happened last time it was upgraded to 8.1, but surprisingly it seems to have survived the experience. I do seem to have squandered a lot of evening time this week corresponding about Esperanto VAT and Esperanto insurance. Neither topic is particularly thrilling. However my boyfriend has designed a really cool logo for next year's British Esperanto Conference :) 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

Haha, you should learn and come :D The guest speaker will be Jorge Camacho who is an Esperanto writer/poet. I met him when I was in Madrid over the summer and he's a really nice guy. We are also hoping to get enough people together to run a session of the Esperanto CEFR exams (just the written part) at B2. More info will appear on the website in the near future. Today's the last day of the month (how did that happen?!) so it's time to summarise my Super Challenge activity again.
During October I have read: 16. Ušica igle 17. Dolina Lavova 18. Rajski čekić 19. Što je muškarac bez brkova I've also read 114 pages of 'Sanjao sam slonove', but not finished it yet. Three of the above books were translations of English books (Ken Follett) into Serbian. 'Što je muškarac bez brkova' is significant because it is the first authentic Croatian novel that I have read. Overall I have finished 19 physical books, which takes me to 146.5 books. My monthly reading stats are: May 2014 - 1 808 pages June 2014 - 1,441 pages July 2014 - 872 pages August 2014 - 1,462 pages September 2014 - 414 pages October 2014 - 1,342 pages I'm quite pleased with October's total considering that I was on holiday for a week, mainly reading in English. However it has been inflated by the fact that I was stuck in London on Sunday with only 'Što je muškarac bez brkova' to read. In terms of films, this month I have watched: 13 episodes of 'Bitange i Princeze' 2 entire films ('Pjevajte nešto ljubavno' and 'Što je muškarac bez brkova') A few more chapters of the audiobook 'Istorije slučaja' My monthly film stats are: May 2014 - 941 minutes June 2014 - 713 minutes July 2014 - 1,081 minutes August 2014 - 827 minutes September 2014 - 1,856 minutes October 2014 - 971 minutes That takes me to 71 films. I'm a bit disappointed with the films; I was hoping to have done better than that. I guess I didn't watch anything during the week that I was in Sardinia, but I feel like I've done quite a lot since I've got back. I think I need to try to watch something every day, but it still feels very unnatural for me. Anyway I'm looking forward to the start of the 6WC tomorrow and hoping it will give me more motivation to get on with Croatian things that aren't related to the Super Challenge :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
