Here is my weekly update. This is my third week studying. The first two weeks were
more of a warm-up than any thing else. So, this is my first full week attempt and I think it went well.

I'm still tweaking my Spanish studies and tryiing new things. As of now I've settled on five daily studies:
-- Listen to one lesson of Pimsleur's Latin American Spanish. This includes just
reviewing a previous lesson. Sometimes I just don't get it on the first attempt.
-- Read five pages of Spanish Demystified by Jenny Petrow.
-- Read five pages of Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish by Margarita Madrigal.
-- "Plant" five new words on Memrise. I'm studying the lessons named "1500 Spanish
Word Intro" and "Learn Basic Mexican Spanish."
-- Practice or study at least one section of Spanish on Duolingo. I'm still trying to figure out how this site works.

I tried a site called Lang-8 but find it a bit confusing. I may try it again later. I may also try a language exchange later. I don't have enough confidence to try one know.

I started following a telenova called "Qué Pobres Tan Ricos." I'm already confused and behind. It was suggested to me that I might want to start with the Destinos telenovela first. I did find one site that has daily recaps of telenovelas:
http://caraycaray.blogspot.com/

I hope everyone has a good week studying!

I'm impressed by your commitment! That's a packed schedule!

I'm using Memrise for Tagalog, and I'm really enjoying it. That said, I think that Duolingo works better for me. I
like how Duolingo builds vocabulary and sentence structure at the same time. My main suggestion for Duolingo
would be to read the discussion for an exercise when you don't understand, or when you see that there are lots
of messages. The program itself doesn't explain anything, it just builds on itself. There are usually good
explanations in the discussion thread linked on each exercise.

(I just wrote a review of Duolingo on my blog. I'm linking it here because I think it might be useful:)

I'll second the recommendation to watch Destinos before diving into other telenovelas or Spanish language
shows! It's slow and cheesy, but it *works*. My comprehension grew by leaps and bounds when I watched the
entire show. (confession: I did skip some of the recap episodes because I was getting impatient)

I know you already have a lot of resources, but I can also highly recommend the podcasts on Notes in Spanish for
developing listening skills and expanding vocabulary:

Notes in Spanish

re: adding links to your posts - they often add a space in the copied and pasted link, to discourage spamming.
So you can either remove the space, or you can wait until you have enough posts to add in a hyperlink (which you
can do with the earth/chain icon when you're composing a post).

So, for example, in the Lobos thread you copied and pasted your log:

http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?T ID=37763&PN=1&TPN=2

You'll notice that there's a space in the middle: T ID instead of TID

You can edit your post to remove the space.

Anyway, I look forward to following along on your log! Happy learning!

Well, I'm still plodding along with my studies. I hit a bump in the road during the middle of the week. On my way to do some errands I hit a pothole and got a flat tire. I had to get towed to my service station, get a loaner car and it cost me $300. I decided to blow the day off and spent my time watching cartoons. The next day I got back on the language wagon.

I've noticed that I'm requiring more reviews of each Pimsleur lesson. I'm up to lesson ten and wondering if I should go back to lesson five or six and just review before I move on to a new one.

Tomorrow is my wife's birthday, so I'm taking a day off to buy her a nice seafood lunch.

Sometimes breaks are just what we need. :) Sorry it had to be due to a flat tire though.

I'm doing Pimsleur in Russian and am going slow-slow-slow. I'm not entirely sure, but I think the goal is to be are
80% comfortable with the material before going on, so I'm sure repeating is fine (and maybe gives you a nice
confidence boost if an earlier lesson seemed hard initially and now seems super easy).

My belief is that as long as you are consistently working on learning the language, it will pay off over time. Were
any of the cartoons you watched in Spanish? If so, your brain was still at some level absorbing the language, even if
it just felt like fun.
