I'm a beginner at the language, and I've thought about trying out some Russian children's books. The only problem is that all the literature I find online in it is too advanced for me. What are some children's books in it that would be good for a pretty much beginner?

There are Russian texts online, short stories but also children's books, with subtitles, so also accessible to a beginner, and that you can read anywhere on your smartphone or tablet, or behind a laptop or pc:
Bermuda Word Has Russian fairytales and short stories where every word has manually translated pop-up translation. The Polyglot Project Has a lot of content but google translated so not always easy to understand or in right conjugation or correct. Also literature only, no starters texts. Doppeltext Russian English Has some example free texts but rest cost money. The dual-language readers that I knew are not free (anymore). Studypubs Russian English Not free. You can preview the whole book I think but it's not very handy for reading. Nothing beats reading an actual book but there needs to be a stage between a Russian course and actually reading books (which is btw the best method by far to become fluent, as you will never encounter as many new words in any other method than plain old reading). You can also consider russian graded readers (available on the internet, if you see what I mean.)

I don't advise to read children's literature, it's better to read Chekhov's stories: more
