Hi!
My native language is polish. I must confess it might be difficult for foreigners, but I really like my language. Slavic languages are very similar, so I'd like to learn a slovac or chech languages in future. I think it's good to know languages of our neighbours :) 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I have no particular attachment to English, but that's probably because I've simply gotten bored of it--I've spoken it most of my life, after all, such things are bound to happen. I don't hate it or love it--it just is. I am, however, exceptionally glad to speak such a useful tongue fluently.
I should say I don't think there's anything wrong with hating one's native tongue. In fact, the idea that one should automatically love one's native tongue strikes me as a notion, if not racist, of the same cloth. We're all free to love whatever language we want and, what's just as important, not love whatever language we want, no matter what we grew up speaking. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

What does it have to do with race? Too many vaguely related things are labelled as racism nowadays.

All right, man, give me a break, I said *like* racism.
And no, chauvinism is not the word. And I mean like racism in the sense that it's a belief that a person should be a certain way based on the accidents of their birth. In much the same way, say, a racist would say a person of a certain race should occupy a certain social rank, a person may--and this is objectionable as well--say a person should, because they happen to be, say, Irish, learn or love the Irish language. My point is people should be free to do what they want, no matter their race, ethnicity, or native tongue. An Eskimo is free to hate the Eskimo language, hate whaling, and hate the cold, and I wouldn't judge them negatively for it. Racism was indeed a provocative comparison, and I intended it as such, but I could have used sexism or any -ism which presumes a person should be a certain way or should hold a certain set of beliefs merely because of their ethnicity, gender, and whatever set of characteristics that people come into this world with but which, properly, have no bearing on who a person should be. 5 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I am no man. (and I know it's just an expression, but I'm sick of the default assumption that I'm a man)
And as you don't like this overuse of the word racism, no need to contribute to that. It's just that being Russian and white, I've not experienced racism but "only" nationalism/xenophobia. So when these are used interchangeably, it's as if the discrimination I've faced is less legitimate than actual racism. I do think the word chauvinism fits here, as demanding people to love their country and language is basically about excessive patriotism. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Hate is a strong word, and I wouldn't use it, but I always wished I spoke a different dialect. I don't like mine, partly because I know a lot of other people don't like how it sounds, and I tend to agree with them. It doesn't help that over half of my family speaks a much classier dialect that I have always loved, and it was only by chance that I wasn't raised in the same area as them (Bergen <3). But I like my native language overall, especially the playful side of it that mixes in all sorts of influences to create something funny.

Racism is real. Racism is brutal. Racism hurts. I find it utterly tasteless - to be very polite about it - to hurl the word racism at anything and anyone you disagree with. The kids have a game right now. It goes like this: "Oh look at that dark cloud" -Racist!!!! "I bought myself a pair of black jeans today" -Racist!! "I really like Asian food" - Racist!!! I find it heart wrenching that the parody of using the term where there is no racist content whatsoever has become a game, although I understand why. For any person to be capable to hate any language ever is utterly puzzling to me. Language is one of mankind's finest inventions, who has the capability to hate any of them?
