We can read. He admitted it himself that it was provocative to compare it to racism. Kinda like the thing about mentioning hitler.
Also, if you want more synonyms, there's discrimination, positive stereotypes and (not) minding one's own business.

It's time to stop talking about racism. This isn't a "Politics Forum". We don't have a "General Lounge" section to talk
about miscellaneous topics. Otherwise, I would allow the conversation to continue.
For the sake of my thread to not be closed by a moderator, I want an end to this. There's already a thread titled,
"10,000 Hours Thing", that was just recently been closed for discussion.
Please do me a favor and discontinue the racism talk. My thread is about one's native tongue, and what they
like/dislike about it. It's not a racism thread.
Though if there is someway the Administrator can add a "General Lounge" section, that would be greatly
appreciated. ;)

Then it would help if you worded it in a way that doesn't make people defensive. I'm also not sure it's possible to discuss "hating one's native language" without addressing the idea that we're somehow obliged to love it.

RIP 10,000 Hours thread :-(
Agreed.
On topic... My 14-year-old cousin has a lot of resistance to her (first) native language Russian and never speaks it anymore, even though she understands everything. She's been living in Norway since she was around 4 years old and speaks Norwegian fluently, but I have to wonder what she really feels about Russian. When she was younger she seemed to think it was kind of annoying and would probably prefer it if her mother didn't speak it to her (not going to happen, and one day she might be grateful). Maybe she was embarrassed by the differentness or something (like those half French kids in an article someone wrote a thread about recently who would distance themselves from their dad in public if he spoke French to them), I think it's normal for kids to want to be 'the same' on some level. But I don't get the impression she hates it at all. It's just kind of a non-issue.
She has no intention of learning to speak it. I might try to ask her what she thinks sometime, if it comes up and feels appropriate to talk about. I think it's mostly that she has no need for it right now and speaking Norwegian to everyone is just easier and an ingrained habit, but it seems like a shame to lose active use of one's native language entirely. It's not like we can make her, but I don't know, sometimes she seems like she'd be open to it if only someone gave her the right reason to speak it. I wish I knew the right words to tell her...
Liz

Now really, this is getting silly.
I was the first to mention racism, and I did not do so willy-nilly. Rather I related it in a very particular way to the
original topic. I did not label any particular thing as racist, but simply said a certain attitude was similar to racism
in a specific way, which I spelled out explicitly. I further specified how other terms could have been used just as
relevantly. A General Lounge section is uncalled for because I have no interest in discussing racism, or whatever
else at length, but only insofar as it relates to the topic at hand, that being disliking one's own language. Others
have used this mention as a springboard to go off about the overuse of the term "racism," or to regale us with tales
of children using the term in a humorous (or not) fashion and then rudely insinuating my maturity level is the
same. But the fact that certain people think a term, racism in this case, but whatever it may be, is an excuse to go
off another topic is of course no reason to forbid discussion of that term in those instances where it is relevant to
the original topic--e.g., my original post.
Finally, I note that some were perfectly capable of grasping my point without flying into theatrics. If we could all
emulate them, we could have mature discussions, even when the terminology turns slightly combustible.

No, but I do share some of his frustration at the moment. By my count, almost half the posts in this thread are now arguing about ScottScheule's post. I just read his post, and also I found his racism analogy excessively inflammatory. (I'm happy to explain why via PM if anybody cares.) But the original discussion has now been thoroughly buried.
In the last two days, we've had a whole bunch of threads degenerate into angry arguments: The 10,000 hours thread, the Hindi thread, and now this one. It seems like there's something in the air these days…
I actually found FashionPolyglot's original post to be pretty interesting. Please keep in mind that FashionPolyglot is a native Tagalog speaker living in an English-speaking society, and (like many such people), he's actually stronger in English than he is in his native tongue (if I recall correctly—did I get that right, FashionPolyglot?). A lot of people in this situation have complex and negative feelings towards their native language: they feel shame for speaking their language, and shame for not speaking their language better. If you search the Heritage Language tag, you'll find several people who feel this way.
For those of you who can't possible imagine why anybody would "hate" their native language, consider this thread an opportunity to listen and learn. And please leave enough space for the people who do "hate" their native languages to explain why they feel that way.

Certainly, I just found the tone quite bossy. But I definitely hope we can continue the discussion.

That's ridiculous. In my opinion that's just another example of the usual suspects trying to impose their mediocrity on each and everybody. It was an interesting, albeit slightly surprising, thought and a perfectly valid analogy. I know whose posts I must read if I (ever) want to learn about epic voyages towards the fabulous utopia of B2, [Personal remarks towards various posters deleted. Please see my post on the next page. -emk]. It's bad enough that these posts are so wide-spread and so frequent that one cannot avoid them, but the self-proclaimed thought controllers are not satisfied that they exert control by drowning the forum in their repetitious banality, they even want to eliminate the few remaining rests of content, even single sentences, that do not comply with the rules dictated by their intellectual restrictions and narrow educational horizon.
Keep up the good work!
