Musical Spanish - Lessons for the Road is a 2 CD set
meant to teach you some of the basics in the context of
musical selections.
The basic format is a complete song is played in
Spanish. I have this feeling the music is performed by
the author's husband. He's a good singer, the
arrangements are generally upbeat.
It's a light weight program. I bought the CD to be
part of my Spanish studies for a 12-14 hour road trip.
I also had Platiquemos, and a children's verb
conjugation song tape. In the context of my road trip,
it was worthwhile purchase. Not because of what it
taught me, but for it's "fun factor".
Back to the format of the CD. There are about 30
tracks per CD. 10 tracks are songs. 10 tracks are the
translation of the songs. The other tracks, about 4
per song are on some grammatical point.
So now that I've established I'm satisfied with the
purchase, here's some things I didn't like.
The narrator is not a native speaker. She has a fine
accent and she admits she's not native. This is a
digital recording. The normal pauses between narrative
phrases are chopped out. It's the sort of hack job I
might do myself if I had enough coffee. It's kind of
tiring to listen too though because the pace of the
narrative is forced fast. For my road trip, I'd listen
to a song and the 5 other tracks which is about 16
minutes. A good length for a breather between
Platiquemos units.
The song selection is mostly classics, but some of
lyrics seem to have been changed. Like "La Cucaracha"
mentions "Nintendo", which wasn't around when Mel Blanc
and Speedy Gonzales did it for Bugs Bunny back in the
60s.
