Russian Boot Camp: Introduction

[Boot Camp: "a short, intensive, and rigorous course of training" (New Oxford American Dictionary, 2001).]

I've freed up two full weeks in my calendar for the specific purpose of levelling up my embarrassing and floundering Russian. During this time, I aim to study episodes of the fun Russian tv series "Кухня" from home during the day, and then watch and enjoy them together with my wife in the evening.

At the moment, my ever-patient missus thinks I'm probably around a low B1 on the CEFR scale. This sounds and feels about right, especially given my long absence from speaking or studying any real amount of Russian. So this project is a great way to kick-start (sorry, I couldn't resist) my Russian back into action.

By the end of two weeks, I hope to progress to a more comfortable level in my speaking and listening skills (for both listener and speaker), and to help me along, I'll try to think and speak only in Russian as much as possible and create a Russian mircoclimate around me in my travels to and from my little домик.

Current level:
Low B1 at best (after a day or two of sanding off the rust and applying WD40).

Goals:
- Primary goal: Make my wife happy.
- Secondary goal: Reach a mid-intermediate level of spoken proficiency and fluency in Russian (approx. B1+ on the CEFR scale).

Duration: 2 weeks (3 day intermission midway).
- Starts: Monday, 23rd June, 2014
- Intermission: 30th June - 2nd July
- Ends: Sunday, 9th July, 2014

Activities:
Intensive listening and reading; active immersion; conversational practice; blogging.

Materials:
Russian tv series "Кухня" with accompanying transcripts kindly provided by Big_Dog (aka leosmith on HTLAL) and his tutor Patineuse; pocket notebook and pen; hover-over dictionary, word frequency software, and online blog.

Good luck with your endeavour! I just started on Кухня too, using the same transcripts. I'm still figuring out how I'm going to use it. It's a bit hard to simultaneously watch the video and keep one's place in the document. I'm thinking, watch the 20 episodes first with minimal use of the text - just for familiarity and to improve my ear. Then spend time reading the text, researching unknown words and marking it up with some colours (this could potentially take weeks). Then rewatch all the episodes (or perhaps extract mp3s for walks). I'm interested to hear what your strategy is.

I'm currently working on developing a "better" strategy already (lol); theory rarely predicts practice. And I'll need it pretty soon too - that first breakneck speed paragraph is almost a showstopper!

Удачи, товарищ!

Here's another guy trying to study Russian with the Кухня transcripts. I downloaded them a few days ago, but forgot about them during the hassle of getting my account reactivated. Thanks for reminding me of them!

I'm happy to hear that several of us are studying these transcripts, and am particularly looking forward to hearing how you guys get on and which strategies you find most helpful.
