The top-selling crime novels are pretty easy to follow, since they contain mostly
common vocabulary (as well as some crime-related words ofc).
The Song of Ice and Fire books are written pretty straightforwardly in German, without
an exaggarated use of old-fashioned expressions. Of course, you'd encounter a lot of
words that you wouldn't have much use of elsewhere as well as the polite 2nd person
pronoun Ihr.
These are at least my general observations after having read about 40 novels in German.
