So I've finally started Portuguese now, albeit I haven't been studying it for several hours a day even though I'm in for the 1 week challenge... First the reason was that I was too tired - my holidays had just started. Today I've tried to study more though, but I've realized I can only listen to spoken texts in an unfamiliar language for a short while before my mind gets 'tired'. So obviously I started looking for some Portuguese music and I've found http://portugalunderground.blogspot.com/, which is wonderful. Hopefully I'll get some 3-4 hours of Portuguese music later today then:)
Other than that, I've been listening-reading parts of the Bible at wordproject.org. I've also registered at LinQ, but it makes my computer crazy... what I've seen so far (before Firefox closed) looks better than I expected though. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

My log had the proud writing "One week challenge" in the headline for three days and now I've deleted it. Not that I'm completely out of the challenge, but I'm not even trying to study as much as possible. And I know I AM capable of studying a lot - apparition's Turkish log resembles the first two months of my Finnish studies. Perhaps I'm just not as fascinated with Portuguese as with Finnish (although I do find Portuguese more and more fascinating as I learn new things about it).
I've also decided that I should stop trying methods that absolutely avoid grammar. Nothing wrong with them though. Still I'm glad I've finally given Portuguese a start. Now its presence in my list here will provide motivation to keep on studying it:) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

My profile looked quite lovely a few days ago ^_^
(Most of these 13 languages are actually only on my hitlist) I'm now officially crazy. I signed up for a Portuguese course which starts next week. I didn't mean to start it so early, but before I found these classes I thought I'd have to look for a private teacher. I've already paid a month's fee, don't know yet if I'm going to continue for another month... I've started using Iversen's wordlist method more often. On Wednesday, I learned 70 Finnish words this way during just one boring lecture. I used to fill these "semi-hidden" moments with making sentences (in order to let some grammatical structures sink in), but when you're not doing anything else in parallel (except listening to the lecture with one ear and to the music on iPod with the other one), too much time is wasted anyway. So now if I don't know what to write I just browse my pocket dictionary to find new words and do wordlists with them. I'm not sure, but I think I actually made more sentences at that lecture on Wednesday than I normaly do while NOT doing wordlists. BTW I've checked some old posts and realized that what I do seems to be a modified version of the original method - after writing translations to the first column of words, I write the words again in the third column, then translations again, then the words if there's enough space on the sheet of paper left, of course covering all the columns but the previous one all the time. I've had a look at the exams at lernu.net and there seem to be quite few things required for the basic exam that I still don't know, namely a couple of affixes and some words. If any Esperantist out there is reading it, I'd be very interested to know your opinion: do these basic - middle - high levels correspond to beginner - intermediate - basic fluency or rather intermediate - basic fluency - advanced fluency? In other words, can I claim the intermediate level if I pass the first exam? :) I do feel I'm at this level already, but I somehow hesitate to claim it... probably because my criteria for intermediate are mostly based on grammar and I haven't really done much for it since last summer. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I can't specifically answer your question about competency levels in Esperanto, but have you tried assessing yourself against the new Council of Europe standards for Esperanto downloadable here: http://www.edukado.net/pagina/REFERENCKADRO/18364/#19858 (at the bottom of the page) Or perhaps they are not specific enough for you? Sorry, if I'm telling you something you already know about. I have to confess I haven't been reading all your entries! ;-( Are you able to put together an error-free connected written text yet (e.g. an invented fairy story), with correct Zamenhofan punctuation? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

What I actually want to know is how the exam levels at lernu correspond to the levels at this forum.
As for your specific question: no, I can't, at least absolutely not with 100% correct punctuation. However if I understand correctly, error-free writing is one of the criteria of basic or even advanced fluency for most users here. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Why the hell do I suddenly feel like studying some German only when there's something more important to do??? It's 3:09 AM and Latin homework is still waiting for me.............

I've just made my first trilingual flashcard ever: I've added "paz" to my Latin/Esperanto "pax/paco" flashcard :) Or should I say tetralingual? The Q side is in Finnish ;)
BTW I've continued doing word lists, but for each of them I also add a new card to Mnemosyne and add a note in tiny letters, that it's time to revise the wordlist number X. Don't know whether I should be surprised, but apart from my reading the word-final O's in Esperanto as U's, there's no interference with Portuguese. Quite on the contrary actually: like Latin, Portuguese also activates my Esperanto. I think I've already mentioned that occasionally I'm not able to remember something in the language I read it in, but instead remember it easily in another language. I've had this with Finnish/English and English/Russian, and now also with Esperanto/Finnish, yay! Now about things related to my studies only indirectly. My feelings about this forum have become quite negative, and I think I need a break to start loving it again, like I did for the almost 1.5 years I've been here. I'll still be reading and maybe also writing to the topics in and about Finnish. I really hope I'll spend the free time I'll get actually studying languages! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
