I have heard that the Levitchi dictionary is the most comprehensive Romanian-English dictionary available and wondered whether you, or indeed anyone here was familiar with it. It seems to be fairly substantial, and naturally, not terribly cheap, so I'm wondering whether it would really be worth squandering my student budget on it... |

I haven't got that one. I have bought the English <--> Romanian Teora dictionary (Andrei Bantaş) with 35.000 words Eng->Ro and around 40.000 the other way, and so far I have been quite satisfied with it, - I don't remember the price, but the editor has a web paeg (www.teora.ro). I have forgotten (or repressed the memory of) what I paid for it, but it was not exactly cheap.
Besides I have got a minuscule German <--> Romanian dictionary from Langenscheidt, a Danish --> Romanian dictionary plus a large monolingual dictionary from 1958, published by the Romanian Academy.

I want to lean Romanian in the future, but I am not sure if it is really feasible considering the amount of materials out there and the small interest with the language. How are the Pimsleur and Assimil Romanian courses? The Pimsleur Romanian course doesn't seem as in depth as their other courses (there is only 10 units). For those that have learned Romanian how hard has it been for you to find speakers to practice with?

I wanted to learn Romanian before as well, but really struggled to find anyone to practice with. I've only ever met one or two Romanians here in the US and that was before I had any interest in the language. I did the 10 Pimsleur lessons and that was about as far as I got. Someday I may study it again if I can find more material to work with.

I was lucky: while I was studying French at the university during the 70ties we suddenly got an native teacher from Romania. He returned back home after one year, but then we had another who stayed for 2 years. I followed the courses, and after one year we had gone from 5 pupils (partly teachers) to just one (me) so I was quite fluent after 3 years. But after I left the university in 1981 I doubt that I read one single line in Romanian for the next 25 years, and I certainly didn't get any chance to talk to a native speaker (though a collegue who had a Romanian wife always greeted me with "Buna ziua" each time he saw me so at least I didn't forget that tiny fragment of Romanian).
Here in Europe we have at least the possibility of travelling to Romania and Moldova (don't forget Moldova!), and I actually went there in 2006 on my second visit, thirty years after my first visit under Ceaucescu. Romania has become an easily accessible and very rewarding destination, and I intend to go back there soon. And here in Denmark I can at least hear the language now thanks to the internet, but to be honest I don't get any more chances to speak it than I did before 2006.
So if you want to learn a useful language then Romanian may not be the most logical choice.

That's a shame. It is an interesting language and I like the sound.

Pimsleur is suppose to be coming out with a Romanian comprehensive course before the end of the month. Finding resources with native speakers was not hard for me. I looked around the community to find out. In my area of 30,000+ population city. There is a Romanian community along with other ethnic groups. I found native speakers this way and just called them up. Including with Italian, Spanish, French, etc...
By the way I haven't learned Romanian yet, but am planning ahead with possible resources and such. I have even informed the possible tutors about my plan.
