On Saint-Denis, there's a really great store that says book store on the outside but actually they only sell language courses (including multimedia) and bilingual books. I was very impressed with their selection. They have walls full of items for French, English and Spanish, several dozen titles for common languages such as German, Japanese or Chinese, but even for small African or Native American languages you can find at least something.
The salespeople are knowledgeable language geeks and the prices are good, particularly for French-based textbooks such as Harrap's (like Teach Yourself) or the 40 lecons series (like Assimil), these are only 10 dollars or so. The only problem is with some American courses. Due to the current low of the American dollar and the strength of the Canadian dollar, which has risen from 60% to 101% of the value of the American dollar within a few years, American courses can sometimes be had much cheaper in the USA / from an American vendor. For example, I saw an "Ultimate Arabic" set with a 500-page book and 8 CDs, which was sold for 120 Canadian dollars or something, as the jacket recommended. The jacket also recommended a retail price of 79 American dollars though, and on Amazon.com I even saw the same set for 50 American dollars - really a great price for this much material, if your salary is in Euros...

That sounds great! I'm only a few blocks away, assuming it's closer to sherbrooke :-). Do you remember whereabouts on St. Denis it is?

It's just below des Pins. Librarie Michel Fortin on Google Maps. Man, that place is dangerous. Everytime I go in I have to stop myself from spending $100+. I just have to keep reminding myself that there is no magic bullet ... (better to work on perfecting the materials I have, than buying another book in the hopes that "this time for sure" it'll be the thing I need to push me over into fluency...).
But yeah, great bookstore.
