Copying a lot of text in a foreign alphabet is useful in itself because you have to get the movements automatized, and it obviously takes a lot of exercise to get to that stage. And it is not only very exotic writing systems which benefit from copying exercises, but also Latin letters. For instance I discovered I had to make some accomodations to my diacritics to make the accents in Polish look different, and it took some time and effort to get that into my system - whereupon I temporarily shelved Polish.
However the most important effect of copying things is to make you work slowly enough to actually notice what you are looking at. And to give you time to write down what you should look up later. Or in other words: to make something which you normally hurry through conscious.
ProfArguelles' addition of reading aloud will of course have the effect that you train yourself in pronouncing the language under controlled circumstances, and that must be good, but in practice I can't make myself read aloud in trains or other public places - so at most I mumble, but normally I just think along with the things I'm copying.
