Well, this would take all day for me, so I'll just link my favorite Japanese song.
m-flo loves BoA - the Love Bug
(Coincidentally, m-flo's rapper is Korean and BoA is Korean. Made me lol when I found out my favorite Japanese song was by two Korean.s)

Well, I quite enjoy Ikimonogakari as a band, but I'm nowhere knowledgeable enough to claim that it's top 10 anything.

Glay and L'arc~en~Ciel are popular pop-rock bands which I find to be higher quality than most Japanese popular music. Both bands have talented composers and vocalists, and they run the gamut from catchy to heartwrenching without getting cheesy (that often).
I also second Utada Hikaru as a rare, shining example of talent and quality in Japanese popular music.
Paranday's mention of a female vocalist with her piano brought to mind Angela Aki, who is probably not as major as the others I've listed here, but whom I recommend if that's your thing.
A lot of people seem to be interested in finding popular, modern music that incorporates a traditional Japanese feel. If that's the case for you, there was an 'Okinawa boom' in the 90s (i.e. everything Okinawan was cool), which resulted in an output of modern interpretations of traditional Okinawan music. The most well-known and beloved of these songs are 'Shima Uta' by The Boom (also listen to Natsukawa Rimi's cover) and 'Nada Soso' by Natsukawa Rimi. The lyrics to these songs are interspersed with Okinawa dialect, so they might not be the best to study from, but make for beautiful listening.
Finally, to attempt to redeem myself with a currently hip artist recommendation, I give you Perfume. I usually try to avoid the ubiquitous sugary, mass-produced Japanese pop, but this girl group is a little different. Their sound is like old-school Nintendo given a new life (I don't know how else to describe it - Wikipedia calls it electropop), and their music videos show a unique playfulness that make them hard not to love. Even for people like me who can't really stomach techno or electronic music, they get definite points in the 'catchy', 'original', and 'fun' categories.
Now, if the question were about my Personal Top 10, I wouldn't be able to omit a mention of my favorite Japanese band X Japan, although they aren't for everybody. I'd compare them to Metallica: originally a hair metal band that gained popular appeal and experimented within their genre - although X Japan succeeded in gaining a more diverse fanbase, so much that they remain one of the most successful artists in the history of Japanese music.

Hmm, just thought I'd rummage through some of my youtube favorites that haven't been pulled for copyright violations yet.
I heard this on Learn Japanese Pod. Lyrics seem a little random, but I think it's fun and catchy.

My father mentioned this one, and I like it also. (Don't use Shina for China though.)
