Seconded, although I don't think that Asian Kung-Fu Generation's sound varies very much. I agree that those two albums are their best.

I'm not sure what you like, but I lean more towards indie rock and jazz. If that's your thing, you might like:

Ego-Wrappin': My favourite Japanese band, but not many people I've introduced them to have liked them, unfortunately. 老いぼれ犬の口笛 is a nice slow song, and だるい is also good.

andymori: Fairly standard indie pop. Most of their songs have very fast singing, so aren't all that good for learning Japanese, but Life is Party is nice and understandable.

I also don't think you can go wrong with Shiina Ringo (椎名林檎) and Tokyo Jihen (東京事変), of which she is a member. I haven't listened to all of their albums, but 'Adult' is my favourite.

I always wondered why the song with Japanese lyrics, "Sukiyaki," a big hit by Kyu Sakamoto in the US in the early 60s sounded so "wistful," when it was obviously a song about food.

I know it's a long abandoned thread but thought I might contribute a little. I don't listen to Japanese music but I remember hearing songs like these on TV and the radio back in the days (I included some that are relatively new.)

I love japanese music as much as I love the language itself :)

I often listen to B'z (best japanese Band in my oppinion ♥), Yumi Matsutōya, Naifu, Ann Sally, Salyu and Mai Kuraki.
