A couple of weeks ago while listening to the radio I noticed that today there are hardly any German singers/bands which sing in English (except winners of casting shows...) In my opinion, music in German has never been more popular than today!
In the current (download) charts there are many artists who sing in German:
Tim Bendzko, Herbert Grönemeyer, Clueso, Söhne Mannheims, KIZ, Andreas Bourani, Unheilig, Cassandra Steen, Bosse, Bushido, Peter Fox, Culcha Candela, Xavier Naidoo, Laith Al-Deen
On the other hand, I found only few German artists singing in English:
The Baseballs (doesn't really count, since they play cover songs), Sarah Engels & Pietro Lombardi (winners of a casting show who do not write their own songs), Beatsteaks, Guano Apes (both started their careers more than 15 years ago, when it was rare to sing German..)
The examples I mentioned are only the ones that are in the charts this week, I could add dozens more who have had hits in German during the last years. Interestingly, there haven't been any measures to increase the proportion of German songs on the radio (i.e. no quota system like in France).

This is excellent news... :)
I think Germany has lots of great artists (especially in the hip-hop and rap scene), but I usually have to sift through the MTV.de charts like a patient gold prospector to find new tunes. Of course, that might simply be down to MTV and me just looking in all the wrong places.
I found the same problem with radio stations whilst living in Darmstadt over the last couple of years. Despite several attempts and asking around, I never managed to tune into a station that focussed predominantly on the latest German hits. This would be ideal for a learner like me!
Which charts and radio stations would you recommend checking out?
Vielen Dank!

My point of view, too. I have also seen this other thread and was about to comment on that. However, before they add more German music like that on the radio playlists, they should play better songs in English. Wishful thinking.. (Not forgetting, the Schlager radio stations always seem to have a high German quote.)

That's cool. There are a lot of good German songs out there!! I think Yvonne Catterfeld and Lafee do some songs in English, not sure but I think so. Also, the And One does some in English, but their music is a bit different. I admit, I like this song, (in German) Traumfrau
But, even though I am still learning German, I feel like if I hear a song in German and hear the equivalent in English, it only disappoints me.
Some of my favorite artists, just an fyi are:
Christina Stürmer (Austrian)
Glashaus/Cassandra Steen
Bushido (Vergiss mich)
Sha
MIA.
Xavier Naidoo
Silbermond
Yvonne Catterfeld
Helene Fischer (Ich will immer wieder)
F raz
Lafee
Some of these are a bit older, but still good (for me)
