I don't find the parallel columns format very comfortable for reading on an ereader. The interlaced format, on the other hand, looks ideal, and I think if you published your method for creating interlaced files many people would find that very useful. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yes, ereader screens aren't wide enough for two columns, and it's not that easy to create
two-column files for them in the first place. Perhaps a two-column layout would work in landscape mode, though. Anyway, I will polish up the script and publish it on the site. It's really just a matter of doing a minor reformatting on the source file and pushing it through the converter utility that comes with Calibre. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

The free sample file provided by Doppeltext that I linked to, actually does not use a two-column layout; it offers two different views: - original text only - original text with translation below Please download either the free German/English edition of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis or the free French/English edition of Maupassant's Le Horla from Doppeltext and open it with Calibre's Book Viewer or ADE and you'll see what I mean. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I know, I opened it in Calibre. I didn't say it had a two-column layout. It's an
interlaced view, and not a very good one in my opinion. It looks pretty messy in Calibre. I didn't upload it to my Kindle, it may look better there. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

That would be great. When you started this thread I had a play with the aligner and although I thought it was interesting I didn't have a practical use for the files it produced, given that I wanted to read on my Kindle. I didn't find landscape mode helped much but on Amazon I found interlaced versions of a few classic books like Madame Bovary: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Madame-Bovary-Bilingual-Paragraph-Tr anslation-ebook/dp/B004CLYDRE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1389562 513&sr=8-4&keywords=madame+bovary+bilingual and found those very easy to read. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Let's do a test then. Here's my Mme Bovary.
How well does this format work? The book is paragraph segmented, which isn't ideal but at least it's fully reviewed (by someone on HTLAL, not me). Chapters are not marked so there is no TOC (this can be done but it requires a bit of manual work). Apart from the repeated titles, which are really only a cosmetic thing, that looks great on the Kindle. I don't think the lack of a TOC is a big issue because you read a novel from front to back. You don't pick chapters or jump around like you might in a collection of essays or stories. And in any case the chapter headings are in the text. For this style of reading I actually prefer it to be broken into paragraphs. One line of L1 followed by one line of L2 disrupts my flow too much. On the order of the languages - source language coming second? I would have thought you would want to try to read the original language first and consult the translation only for reassurance or for when you were stuck, but I realise that's something you can choose when you do the aligning. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Source language? That depends on which language you're learning. You probably want the language you're learning to be on top. Anyway, you will be able to pick which language you want first. In fact I want this to work with my multilingual files so you will
be able to pick the two languages one by one. You will also be able to pick which dictionary you want to use. (The Kindle comes with a couple of built-in pop-up dictionaries, and it chooses a dictionary based on the language that is set for the book. I can set the language when generating the ebook, which is a pretty big deal for me.) I have a decent script now. I will add a GUI and publish it fairly soon.
