I've seen speech therapists at work a few years back. I don't know what I'd expected back
then, but it definitely didn't involve the multitude of toys and language games to help
kids overcome pronunciation and language barriers. And it struck me, then, their work is
very similar to that of a language tutor, albeit for kids. The kid in question, like you,
EMK, was pronouncing the "th" as "f". e.g three sounded like "free". He'd say, I'm free
when he meant three years old, and it was particularly cute :D But yeah, a trip to the
speech therapist might be worth a shot, if at least to help distinguish the differences
in foreigner's aural perception of sounds.

I did something similar the last time I was studying in China. During the two weeks we
had off in October, I hired a voice coach--someone who worked with TV news anchors and
reporters. I met with her for two hours a day and she drilled me on tones. I shouldn't
have been surprised but I was because my ability to "hear" tones in other people's
speaking increased dramatically. She also worked with me on some sounds, the ones that I
tend to get lazy about.
