My reasoning is thus: I occasionally have to deal with the odd Indian wedding party at work. It's always uncomfortable when you realize from the blank stares that they barely understand you. All I can do at these times is just hold my hand up to say how much it costs. The most I want to learn is just enough to be helpful to the customers. Any suggestions on the best place to learn? I don't want to pay money to learn a greeting or two, and the useful information like directions.

If you're looking for free resources, Rupert Snell has made a bunch of resources which are
available at:
http://hindiurduflagship.org/resources/

Scroll down and there are some links to free textbooks. The best resources are the
podcasts, especially Glossaries Alive, which covers vocabulary from each chapter of Teach
Yourself Hindi.

If you are willing to spend a little money, Teach Yourself Beginner's Hindi is an excellent
introductory textbook, and would probably give you all you need to know.

Tyrion, can you clarify what do you need to communicate with the customers?

Note that:
-Not all Indians know Hindi.
-Amongst those who know Hindi, many do not know the Hindi numbering system.

Customers might prefer English :)

I would recommend TY Speak Hindi with Confidence (or it's remake, which ever, I mean the one with 3 CDs), wonderful audio program.
