Hello!

I've written an application that helps learning Mandarin Chinese vocabulary and
sentence structure. It consists of exercises where you translate sentences from English
into Chinese. Then it gives you feedback on the sentences you've written.

It is most suited to learners at beginner and intermediate level, but I encourage
everybody who learns Mandarin Chinese as second language to try it out - it will help
me to find bugs and create more exercises.

Trying it out won't take much time, perhaps 20 minutes. Click below to access the app:
Chinese in Context / 上下文中文

Cheers!

Sounds like an interesting app. for people learning Chinese.

Comments:
1. The application does have useful translating exercises. However, there are some variations of words
that mean the same thing the app. did not accept.
For example: "Many women like to buy clothes" would translate to: "很多女士喜欢买衣服“。On the other
hand, the word "many" can be written as 很多, 好多 or 许多。According to my Chinese dictionary, all 3
variations has the meaning "many". In some cases 2 of the 3 are interchangeable. The app. should be
able to allow different words that mean the same thing when applicable.

2. Writing Chinese: I don't have objections using a writing pad of some sort. I used to have a graphic
writing pad hooked up to the USB of my computer with a laser pen. Now I type all my characters with
Pinyin built into my Mac computer. I know some people who still scribble characters on their iPad as an
input method. Being a fast typist I find typing much quicker.

So far there is no grammar check program for Chinese as other European languages. The main reason is
that Chinese sentences contain a string of characters that do not contain spaces between character
blocks that complete a pronoun, noun, object, etc. like the way English does.

For example: if you write something like: "This is my radio" you'd say: "这个是我的收音机“。In the English
version "This" is clearly the subject, "is" is the verb", "radio" is a noun clearly separately by a space. But
in the Chinese version it is all 1 continuous string of characters. If you are the first to come up with an
app. that can scan Chinese phrases whether they are grammatically correct, this would be a huge
market potential. It would make translating between Chinese & English more accurate than Google
Translate already in the market. Just a suggestion...

It does lack a bit of flexibility, but as a tool that is still in progress - great idea! I'll be expecting this app :)
