Learning sayings, and whatnot? | ||

I'm curious about the best way of learning things like sayings and figuring out things like headlines, or just the
odd or different ways some languages phrase things. The deeper I go in the languages I know I realize what is written is not always meant to be literal. I've always known this but it never occurred to me until I was reading a headline in French "Fin en queue de poisson" that I realized it's not as easy as knowing grammar and syntax. The best I could come up with was fish out of water. ( I realize its likely very wrong) Google disagreed, "end fishtail", I saw another translation that made more sense but can't remember. Either way the article was about a Canadian football team loosing. Does poisson mean something besides fish as well? 1 person has voted this message useful | |
