My greatest autodidactic success thus far was learning French from essentially scratch to basic conversation
and pleasure reading fiction. The only formal structured learning I did was Assimil, and the rest was
"extensive reading and listening." I also learned a useful amount of Italian the same way.

Thank-you for the thorough explanation of Assimil. I think someone said above they are working on a
Yiddish program in English.
Which is the best forum to discuss your progress and ups and downs?

The best place to chart your progress and talk about your trials and tribulations is in the Learning Logs Section. The more interesting a log is to read, the more people will come to visit.
