The latest episode of the Ask Me Another podcast featured a segment in which British actor Andy Serkis had to define several Britishisms. One of them was "boob tube."
I was quite surprised to learn that it can refer both to an item of clothing and an electronic device, because I only knew one of them. (I'm being deliberately obtuse.)
Here's a question for HTLAL members from the UK: if someone had asked you to define "boob tube," (without any context) which definition would you have given?

I would say:
1) Television
2) Tube top for woman.
:)

definitely the T.V. In that context, it is not limited to the U.K.

I would definitely have said it was a skimpy item of clothing for women. I've never heard
any electronic device referred to as a boob tube!

I would have gone for an item of clothing too - I did not know it could mean TV until today!

Which boob tube came first? I believe it was the TV.

Yeah, boob-tube is an old term for a television (I believe it's because the tubes in the older televisions were shaped like boobs). As for the article of clothing, I've always heard it called "tube-top" but never "boob-tube" in that context. Then again, that's here in America; maybe it's more of a British saying.

I thought that it was because watching too much of it could turn you into a boob.
