Like a number of forum members, I often experience the wanderlust effect, and want to switch my study languages. I was recently trying to figure out is there a specific trigger that causes it. In my case, I think I’ve found it. I’m most likely to experience the effect if I’m listening to the same language spoken by the same speakers. This could also be called the course effect, as most courses use a limited number of speakers on their recordings. The effect is lessened if the majority of the audio is dialogues all in the target language, but heighted if the audio consists of single words or phrases and if it includes English.

I never experience the experience the effect if I’m reading in the language, even if it’s mixed between English and the TL. Having identified the trigger, it makes it very easy to avoid, as I now alternate different types of audio on alternative days.

Have you identified what triggers your wanderlust ?

I'm most prone to wanderlust when:

- meeting someone at random, e.g a tourist asking for directions. I just want to interact, don't care what language it is.
- a particular language's sound becomes irresistably attractive (ahh, Latvian....)
- I get bogged down in my L1 studies, and crave the sense of progress in a nice new language (which of course will be so much easier and much more fun!!)
- food. (Yes, I'm looking at you, pomegranate and pistachio turkish delight).

- pretty much any excuse really.

Seconded. Also, mine is very often triggered when I hear a friend speak well in the language (even if they're not native speakers). My best friend passed me the bug of Nahuatl and German in this exact same way.

My main wanderlust trigger is YouTube videos with someone speaking or singing in a language I don't know.
